Can't remove malware

I have a stange program (bho1=.exe) running on my computer that I believe is malicious malware. It seems to have replicated itself in various areas on my computer and it won't allow me to delete any of the .exe's from these areas. I tried finding the source but I haven't succeeded. These are the places where it can be found running (I should say - I know where it's running):

C:\
C:\Documents and Settings\J&B
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi

I ran HijackThis. I pasted a copy of the log below.
My question is - what exactly is running on my computer and how do I get rid of it.
Thank you.

Welcome to Tom Coyote. Your Operating System is very outdated as is your Java, this is leaving you open to all sorts of attacks. I am not looking at anything real serious on your log.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ycomp/def…/search/ie.html

If you know what these are you can leave them otherwise fix them also.

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools> Windows Updates and download and install all critical updates, you should have Service Pack 2 installed and many updates after that. Do not install any Driver files

Then update your Java
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

After you have installed all the updates, run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may show us somethings that are not on your log.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
Since you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace.
12. reboot
13. Post Panda scan results in your next reply

Let me see the Panda Report and a New HJT log.
Hi,

I deleted what you mentioned, except Netilla that's still needed. I tired to install Service Pack 2 but I had to uninstall it:-\ The reason I don't have it is because no matter what I try after it's installed my system does not recognize my mouse or USB's. I thought of reinstalling Windows XP (fresh install) and trying SP2 again but I did that 3 times when I first got my computer and it didn't work then either. From what I've read on line Dell 4600 series has problems with SP2.

I ran Panda and made a new HJT log.
Thank you for your quick response and help!!
:)

Thank you.

Go to Start > Control Panel ( up at the top left , make sure your in Classic View ) and open Java.
Then look for a tab that says cache and choose clear cache.
( Newer version might have delete Temporary Internet files, delete them)
Do that for every Java icon, if there is more than one.

It does not look like Smitfraud is present , but Panda picked up a few bad files, we will remove them in a bit.

Lets run the trial of AVG Antispyware, it will clean you up real well and I also need to see the report.

Do this……..

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Still in Safemode, delete these files.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\16408.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\74322.exe

Reboot normally and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Thank You Atribune :D

Let me see the AVG log and a New HJT log please
Hi,

Good Morning Sparks :D

If you look through your AVG log you will see that it removed both those files you could not find  You will notice also that there are a lot of entries backed up in your System Restore Program, so we need to flush it all out and I can't stress enough now important it is to Create A New Restore Point.

First open AVG and go to the Quarantine Folder and delete it all, nothing in there you want to keep on your system.

Now lets flush out System Restore and Create a New Restore Point.

Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this
System Restore Tutorial <– If you need it

The rest of your log looks fine  Any other issues??
Hello, The "bho1=.exe" that won't let itself be removed from any of the places it's located is ok then and nothing to worry about? If so, then all is great!! Many, many thanks for all your help!! Sparks :) :)
sparks,
That BHO1 could possibly be related to Clientman Adware although its not showing up on your log.

You have Spysweeper installed , check for updates and run the scan and let me see the report.

Tutorial for CCleaner

Reboot and run Blacklight, its a quick scan and will show bad hidden files if there are any.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Let me see the Blacklight log and a new HJT log please.

Thanks again,

:)
Sparks,

Your log is fine  and Blacklight found nothing so at this point I don't think there is anything to worry about. As a final maneuver, we can run the free online scan from Trendmicro.

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Let me see this report and if all is ok I have some free tools for you to install to help keep you more secure.
I am closing this thread due to no response.

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
