I am suddenly having issues connecting to the internet from my home computer and I am not sure if it is due to spyware, malware, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forums

It might be your router / external modem. When mine starts messing up, I unplug the power from them for at least 5 mins., and plug the power back in. That usually works for me.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select " "Quarantine" .".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.
It is strange, I can get on the internet with the pc if I boot it into safe mode with networking…but as soon as you boot into normal mode it will no longer connect to the internet.

I completed your instructions and here are the updated log files:

Thank you for your help with this.
* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Here is a copy of the combofix log and the new hijackthis log:

What happens in normal mode when you try the internet?

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Okay I did that and rebooted….when i click on IE it opens and instead of getting a start page I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" I click on diagnose connection and it gives me the following info: "Windows has detected a problem with the winsock provider catalog on this computer".

If I click on the log from the network diagnostic it says the following under Winsock Status:

"\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{294AD91E-701E-496A-AE5B-E6E52039A618} protocol is not found in winsock catalog. Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed."

But when you click to let windows reset it it just does the same thing again, over and over.

Here is the newest hijack this log:

Again, thanks for your help.
I dowloaded it, ran it, and it rebooted the computer…but is still just keeps giving me the "Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message and the same diagnostic error. Is their anyway to download a new winsock catalog, etc? I just don't want to have to re-format the computer unless it is absolutely necessary as everything else works fine, and it still connects to the internet just fine in safe mode…which makes me think something has to be running under normal mode that is keeping the internet from working. I really appreciate all your help.
Windows XP SP2 To resolve this problem if you are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), follow these steps: 1. Rebuild the Winsock LSP chain. To do this, follow these steps:a. Log on to the Microsoft Windows XP workstation as an administrator. b. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. c. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER: netsh Winsock reset When the program is finished, you will receive the following message: Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset. If you receive this message, go to step 1d. If you are not logged in as an administrator, you will receive the following error message: Unable to reset the Winsock Catalog. Access is denied. If you receive this message, log off the computer, and then log back on by using an account with Administrator access. Typically, the first user account that was created has Administrator access. Then, repeat steps 1b and 1c. d. Restart your computer. 2. Test each of your third-party programs that are known to use LSPs. 3. Reinstall any malfunctioning third-party programs that are known to use LSPs.
Still no luck, same error messages….could something still be on their corrupting it when I boot normal mode that doesn't boot up in safe mode?
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns
If you are typing this in, note the space between the g /f
It needs to be there.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks
Okay, I did that and went into the local area connection properties and double clicked on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and the radio button for obtain DNS Automatically was already selected to I pressed OK twice and it sat their for a minute and then closed…now in the system tray the network connection icon is up and it says acquiring network address and it has been doing that now for at least 2 or 3 minutes and doesn't seem to be acquiring one.
Okay I have reset the cable modem and router…both my other desktop and my laptop have acquired a network address…but the other desktop machine that I am having problems with is has gone back to acquiring network address and it just keeps trying.
