My computer has been running slowly and it's now actually uploading to the internet without me telling to do so. It has uploaded over a gig at this point. AVG tells me it has found these files in my registry:

downloader.agent.aii
downloader.agent.beg
downloader.horst.al
proxy.horst

but whenever it says it's quarantined them they just come back. It live at school and have a bandwidth limit so this is not too helpful a situation. Thanks for whatever help you guys can provide, here's my hijack this list

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.nvsvc] C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe /w
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [f31e32d9.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Billy Ridgeway\Local Settings\Application Data\f31e32d9.exe

  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and the Kapersky log.
Hey I did what you told me to, but i can't get they Kaspersky online scanner to work. It opens the window, i press accept and it attempts to download the activex plugin, but then it just goes back the the accept/declin window, but without any buttons. i downloaded a trial version but it always seems to be running about 3 scans at the same time that don't seem to make any progress. It did already locate a problem though:

It finally ran a full scan and found detected: Trojan program Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.vs File: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\setup.exe//UPX
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\setup.exe<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please run Kapersky again and post the results along with a hijackthis log. Also please let me know how your computer is running.
Hey, Kapersky found the same one again but in a different place -

detected: Trojan program Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.vs File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\setup.exe//UPX

also, in the post I made before the one you responded to, it had found this -

detected: Trojan program Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Horst.vs File: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1\A0000017.exe//UPX

though it doesn't find it anymore and I'm not sure if it has been taken care of. Thank you so much for your help thus far, I really really appreciate it. I've made sure to turn of system restore but I don't know if you wanted me to do that or not. My computer has been running slowly, especially at start up where it takes about 4 minutes after I log in to get running completely. Here's my hijackthis log again:

Next go to Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens goto the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\setup.exe<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Empty your recycle bin.

This scan works with Internet Explorer.

alright the panda scan didn't find anything but some spyware and it wouldn't let me see the scan report, something is wrong with my ie i guess. anyways while it was scanning Kaspersky found the virus again in one of the old spots. detected: Trojan program Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.aii File: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\setup.exe//UPX so it seems like this isn't gonna go away. i think i'm just gonna reformat and reinstall windows. if you don't think this is a good idea i'm still open to suggestions but i really want to get this thing of my computer asap. thanks.
