Jan. 30, 2007 ~ "The downloads include fixes for installing the OS on PCs with more than 3GB of memory, troubles connecting with a VPN, and performance issues in IE 7. Microsoft released several updates to Windows Vista Monday, the day before the new operating system debuted for consumers and landed on retail shelves. None of the updates were security fixes.
The five updates for the 32-bit version of Vista – one was immediately replaced Tuesday with an update to the update – fix difficulties installing the OS on PCs with more than 3GB of memory, troubles connecting with a VPN (Virtual Private Network) server, and performance problems with Internet Explorer 7 and its anti-phishing feature. The largest of the five updates, however, is one that addresses incompatibility issues for a host of applications and games, ranging from Adobe's PhotoShop to Zoo Tycoon. Multiple Microsoft titles – Microsoft Money, Outlook 2003 – are also on the list. Others of note include Opera 9.02, IBM Rescue and Recovery with Rapid Restore, Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5, and RealPlayer…
The first scheduled security updates after the consumer release of Vista are pegged for Feb. 13."

NIST Bans Vista
- http://www.informationweek.com/shared/prin…cleID=198000229
March 12, 2007 ~ "…Tech staffers at NIST, a part of the Department of Commerce charged with promulgating technology standards, are scheduled to meet on April 10 in Gaithersburg, Md., to discuss their concerns about the new operating system, which Microsoft released to consumers in January amid much fanfare and to businesses in December with lesser flair. According to the formal agenda for the meeting, NIST technology workers will attend a session entitled "Windows Vista Security" to discuss "the current ban of this operating system on NIST networks." NIST officials weren't immediately available to comment. Word of NIST's Windows Vista ban comes a week after InformationWeek revealed that the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration have both imposed similar blackouts on the operating system, as well as on Microsoft Office 2007 and Internet Explorer 7…"

8 August 2007 - "…The updates have a combined size of 5.7Mb and both require a system restart. They have yet to be made available through Windows Update. Both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista are affected… Performance problems have cropped up with screen savers, network printers, corrupt AVI files, slow response times and corrupted RAW files with some Canon cameras. More serious problems addressed by the patch include corruption of offline files and machines forgetting their default gateway addresses. Memory management has also been improved, says the company. Vista SP1…PC World initial tests

8 February 2008 - "…according to the likes of PC World*, SP1 comes with a few bugs of its own… installation in PC World's tests, took 27 minutes and three reboots. Most of the time was taken up by Vista having a little think while it 'prepared the configuration'. Start-up and shut down times remained the same. It seems the nine per cent improvement in file copying times was the only real difference…"

Vista SP1 Blocks AV Programs
- http://www.informationweek.com/shared/prin…cleID=206801120
Feb. 21, 2008 - "A major update to Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system could leave computers vulnerable to hackers and malware as the service pack prevents several widely used antivirus programs from operating, the company said. The list of security products that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 blocks includes Zone Alarm Security Suite 7.1, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, and BitDefender 10. It also blocks the 2008 version of the Jiangmin antivirus product. Microsoft said the blocks occur because the antivirus programs are not compatible with Vista SP1. "For reliability reasons, Microsoft blocks these programs from starting after you install Windows Vista SP1," the company said in a statement posted Wednesday on its support Web site*…"
