Hello,
1) I have a T60 IBM Lenovo which uses a lot of IBM ThinkVantage functions. I get an error everytime I turn my computer on, which I think is related to why I cannot use my ThinkVantage Access Connections program which allows me to connect to wireless connections.
The error I always get is:

[C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Common\Logger\Logmon.exe

Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Common\Logger\Logmon.exe'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the Start button, and then click Search.]

2) Also, my computer runs extremely slow for having 1024 Mb of RAM.

3) Finally, my internet explorer homepage was set at sex.com and I was unable to change it to anything, it was as if in a lockout mode. Then I ran the HijackThis program and saw where it was and deleted it. Now, the sex.com homepage is no longer present, but I cannot set the homepage to anything, I am still locked out.

What is safe to do to fix things.

Please help! Below is my HijackThis Log Thank you.

Hello!
I go by FencerGirl. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It may take me a while to reply to you as all of my fixes are being checked by experts to ensure that you are getting a good fix. And remember, like you I have a real life, so I may not be at my computer when you are!

FencerGirl
Oh yeah, one more thing I forgot to mention. I am not sure if this is related to spyware or something related. Also, I cannot access google or gmail using Internet Explorer. Thank you FencerGirl.

Hi MrJingles,
It looks like you had a SmitFraud infection. Let's make sure it's all cleaned up. Then we'll try to figure out how to get your wireless connection fixed.

MOVE HIJACK THIS! Hijack This works best when it lives in its own dedicated folder. It's currently running from your temp folder, which means that any back ups it creates are in danger of being deleted.
Please browse to:
C:\Documents and Settings\eperez\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 3 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe
Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Copy.
Now, browse to:
C:\Programs Files and create a folder called Hijack This by right clicking and selecting New >> Folder
Open your new folder named Hijack This. Right click in the Hijack This folder and select Paste.
Please run HijackThis from this location from now on.

Disable PC Tools Spyware Doctor.
1. Open Spyware Doctor
2. Click on the 'Settings' button on the left hand panel
3. Then click on the 'Startup Settings' under 'Pick a Category'
4. Uncheck the box on the right that says 'Run at Windows Startup'

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Download the Hoster from here.
Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.

Finally, with Spyware Doctor still disabled, try resetting your homepage and let me know the results.

Please post back with a new HijackThis log and the contents of SmitfraudFix report.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

FencerGirl

Edited Jan. 29, 2007 for clarity.
FenceGirl,
I did as you instructed. But my browser is still locked out, but at least the homepage is a blank.

First I have the SmitfraudFix log:

MrJingles
Hi MrJingles,
Let's do some cleaning.
  • Run Smitfraudfix
Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

FencerGirl
Hello FencerGirl,
The hirtellous file you mentioned was not present after I ran the HijackThis program. Also, when I ran AVG nothing came up to Quarantine only a handful to Delete, but there were 90+ infected items.

Below are the requested logs, in this order:rapport, AVG, and HijackThis.

MrJingles
Hi MrJingles,
You're looking good on the malware front. Let's finish up a few more things.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version…

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
I also see that you are running Adobe Reader 7. This version has known security problems. You may want to consider updating to Adobe Reader 8.
(I'd recommend unchecking the box to download Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition.)

Please post back with a final HijackThis log and let me know:

How is your computer running?
Do you still get the IMB ThinkVantage error on startup?
Can you change your home page?

Thanks!
FencerGirl
Hello FenderGirl:
I performed all of the updates and installed all of the programs you suggested. I still do indeed get that error at startup. Also, I still cannot access the file which allows to me to connect to different wireless connections through thinkvantage.
Attached I have the HiJackThis report as well as the message I get at startup, I was unable to paste the image in this field.

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Common\Logger\logmon.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

Thank you.

Your latest log looks clean! Great Job!

I'm not sure how to address the error regarding ThinkVantage. My area of expertise is more malware related than general software. You might try Levovo Support for support.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - You're using Symantec; keep up the good work!
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - You've already got this installed; great job!
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
