I had installed the Kerio Personal Firewall as well (latest version). Please advise on the next steps. Thanks.
:)
Ok it is beginning to look good now :) How is the computer running ? Is the homepage still changing ? Please go to My Computer and navigate to the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system\PDFAid.dll Rightclick it, choose "Properties" "Version"-tab What does it say on ? -Description -Copyrigth -Company name Let me know how the computer is running
Hi, now the homepage does not change anymore. And the computer is running all right, smooth and the speed is ok considered I have installed many heavy duty applications. The properties for PDFAid.dll are as follow: -Description = adobe plugin -Copyrigth = adobe system -Company name = adobe system BTW, there is a nagging/irritating problem with the windows automatic updates where there is this problem of installing a update for the following file with a returned massage: The following updates were not installed: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) I hope it does not compromise the works we had done so far. So does it mean that my laptop is currently freed from virus/malware/trojan/adware/etc? Will it be safe to use it for online banking, etc? Thank you very much for your time and efforts… appreciate it very much. :) BTW, my wife's brand new computer is also showing sign of being infected, it has become so slow eventhough it is only 3 weeks old. I shall start a new tread for her computer soon (once this case is completed). Thanks. Oh, another problem is with the Kerio firewall… from time to time when I open some websites it will come up some kind of intrusion detected massage and end with a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library massage: Runtime error! Program:…gram Files/Sunbelt Software/Personal Firewall/assist.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in a unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. Thanks.
Hi :)

You could try to download & install that update manually from here -> ASP.NET Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Then if Kerio doesn't work, you could try if some other firewall works better. ZoneAlarm is eg very easy to use.

So does it mean that my laptop is currently freed from virus/malware/trojan/adware/etc? Will it be safe to use it for online banking, etc?

Well you were quite infected so I recommend that we run a one more scanner just to be sure…

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Yep still a little cleaning to do…

Delete the following files:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\PCTools\pctools.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvtmpf2.exe

Run ATF Cleaner Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Other infections were in Quarantine folders and in System Restore folders. These can easily be cleaned when we're sure that the computer runs fine.

Post a one more HijackThis log to here.
Hi, I tried to delete the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\PCTools\pctools.dll
but couldn't. Tried with normal delete, in safe mode and using HJT-Misc Tools - Delete a file on reboot… still could not get rid of it. Any idea how to deal with it?

The other one, has been deleted. And here is the HJT scan log:

Ok I need a one more log before we may continue with the removal…

Generate a HijackThis Startup list:
Open HijackThis:
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools Section"
  • Check the following boxes to the right of "Generate StartupList Log":
    • List also minor sections (Full)
    • List empty sections (Complete)
  • Click "Generate StartupListLog"
  • Click "Yes" at the prompt.
  • A Notepad window will open with the contents of the HijackThis Startup list displayed
  • Copy & Paste that log to here (You may need several posts to include everything)
