This one has me stumped! I have run EWIDO, AWG Antivirus, PestPatrol, VundoFix, Etc, Etc, all in Safe Mode. None find any problems. I also tried running RootKit Revealer - but it won't complete.
.
MSConfig shows the program: 06e1bff1.exe being loaded from
C:\documents and settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\06e1bff1.exe
MSConfig says it is being loaded from the registry at:
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
.
When I open the registry with RegEdit, there is no such command in the RUN listings.
When I load a Win98 boot disk and navigate to the appropriate \Application Data\ subdirectory, there is no such file as 06e1bff1.exe.
.
This all smells like Malware, but dang if I can find it. Here's my Hijack This log:
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Merlin1716 and Welcome to the Forums!

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A21333BC-ED73-48BB-A3CB-CE7C0DF6D2F0} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\gebya.dll (file missing)

O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\NavNT\rtvscan.exe (file missing)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\MYDOCU~1\CROSOF~1\services.exe<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Please post the ComboFix log, the Kapersky log, and a new hijackthis log.
Susan:
Thanks for your reply. I followed your instructions - the logs requested are posted below. Please note - in the interests of space, I removed the Kaspersky entries showing viruses in the Norton AntiVirus Quarantined files. I also removed many of the lines indicating "Locked" files, such as the Registry Hives. I did not see ANY files listed in the Kaspersky scan that might indicate an active virus possibility.
.
I tried to locate the C:\MYDOCU~1\CROSOF~1\services.exe file. It was NOT there. I even booted from a Win98 disk, navigated to the MYDOCU~1 folder and did a DIR *. /a - nothing there - no CROSOF~1 directory. Except! I did find the following hidden subdirectory PPATC~1, where is the graphic symbol for the greek character alpha.
.
I renamed this folder as follows: ren ?PPATC~1 XPPATC~1. which produced the now visible folder named XPPATC~1. I entered this folder, and it was empty - so I deleted the entire folder.
.
I also deleted the QOOBOX folder which contained a subdirectory named "Purity" as well as a folder that ended in PPATC~1. there was nothing in any of these folders EXCEPT a text file which held a pointer to the PPATC~1 folder previously deleted.
.
I noticed that the ComboFix listing contained a reference to the
C:\qoobox\purity\Program Files\Common Files\àPPATC~1 folder, previously deleted ??
as well as to
"06e1bff1.exe"="C:\\Documents and Settings\\Merlin\\Local Settings\\Application Data\\06e1bff1.exe"
which I had hoped to be rid of.
.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [06e1bff1.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Local Settings\Application Data\06e1bff1.exe
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if it exists):
C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Local Settings\Application Data\06e1bff1.exe<-file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

======================
The Kapersky log was cut off so I could not review all the infected items.

The one item was quarantined by Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition. It appears to me that you are using AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic as your anti-virus from your hijackthis log. Is the Norton just a left-over application?
Susan:

Sorry about the delay - - just back in town.

Ran Hijack this and deleted
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [06e1bff1.exe] C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Local Settings\Application Data\06e1bff1.exe
.
Then rebooted in safe mode - - looked for the
C:\Documents and Settings\Merlin\Local Settings\Application Data\06e1bff1.exe
.
It did not exist (Directory listing is below)
.
Yes - - I trimmed the Kaspersky listing - there was a lot of irrelevant stuff, including multiple NAV retained quarantine files - none of which were actual threats. I have since deleted those old quarantine files.
.
NAV is no longer active - too many conflicts. Just using AntiVir and AVG Spyware scanner now.
.
After killing the process with Hijack this, rebooting, the new HijackThis log follows as well.
.
Looks clean - - wonder what it was?? Thanks
.

Your hijackthis log appears to be clean. The only thing that bothers me is seeing that Norton entry:
Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server)

STEP 1.
======
Stop and Disable Service
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then cllick OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server) Skip to next step if you cannot find it
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on ‘Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

Step 2
=====
Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\NavNT\rtvscan.exe (file missing)
Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
Gee - - I thought I'd removed NAV ?!?

Anyway - - after I disabled the Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server), I could no longer find the reference to:
O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\NavNT\rtvscan.exe (file missing)
in the HijackThis scan.
.
What I did do was to also "Fix" the following HijackThis entries:
.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vptray] C:\Program Files\NavNT\vptray.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\system32\NavLogon.dll
O23 - Service: DefWatch - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\NavNT\defwatch.exe (file missing)
.
I also went to the Sytem32 folder and renamed (and later deleted) NavLogon.dll (same date/time stamp as SymEvnt1.dll - well known NAV component)
Then I rebooted
.
Curious - the Norton AntiVirus Client (Norton AntiVirus Server) still shows up in the services manager as a disabled service - I wonder if it should show up at all if the related files have all been removed??
.
Follows is the HijackThis log. Looks much better.
I also went to the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine folder and deleted all the old VBN files {old NAV quarantine files with removed threats}
.
Although I have no ides what it was we killed, all seems to work, and I think I have a clean machine
.
Many thanks! :wavey:

Good work Merlin1716! Glad everything is fine now! Now for some final recommendations.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 2.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
