I have been infected for a week now, I keep running AntiVir and each time it appears to find a differrent trojan with a varying number of occurrences between 350 and 3800 !
There have been extra tasks running, like alsys.exe, which keeps coming back so I don't know what is generating that. I also have Spybot and AdAware which I run update/weekly along with AntiVir.
Please could someone check the log below for anything that shouldn't be there.
Thanks

Hi John and welcome to the forums here at Tom Coyote.

This one can be nasty to remove and may take a couple of steps. So stay with me in this thread and even if things appear to be better wait for me to give you the "all clean" before we finish. OK…let's get to work. You appear to have a couple of infections, one being the one that you AV is pointing out. I recommend that you print out these instructions for reference as you will have to boot to safe mode to run this tool.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Please make sure you post back to this thread using the Add Reply button.

Thanks and let me know if you have any questions along the way.
Dave
Thanks for your help Dave, it is much appreciated.
Here is the Report.txt and HijackThis.log files.

Hi John,

Looks like SD Fix did exactly what we needed it too. We still have some more work to do and I have several items I'm still suspicious of. So let's do the following now:

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {30CE93AE-4987-483C-9ABE-F2BD5301AB70} - http://64.156.31.79/100039/uk/ringtone/ringtone.exe
O16 - DPF: {88C51E90-8E9C-4C96-8A45-574D88B63FAF} - http://acceso.masminutos.com/laaplicacion.cab

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

I would like you to run an online virus scanner now:

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also let me know how things are running at this point.

Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,

Hi John,

Obviously from the Kaspersky report you still have several infections going on.

I would recommend at this point that you uninstall your MessengerPlus program. The program itself is not malicious but it comes bundled with LOP and I saw no signs of LOP in your HJT log so I wasn't too concerned until we got things clean, then I was going to mention it. It does have an option when it's installed to not install the LOP spyware and I thought maybe that's what you did. But I see LOP in the Kaspersky report. So again I recommend you uninstall the program and do the following.

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)
2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.
3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.
4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.
5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select Delete on Reboot, and then click the All Files button. That button should now flash on and off with a green color.

3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tvmk1ez.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\OM5.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsxsvc\wsx.ocx
C:\WINDOWS\system32\opnsqr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\HLInstaller5.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AceDentNounWay\Audio New.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AceDentNounWay\owns phone.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\Download Files\dietk_3_0_8.exe
C:\Program Files\Kazaa\TopSearch.dll
C:\Program Files\Diet K\dk\dietk3.dat

4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

5) Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

Several of the infections were also in your restore points so let's clean those up and set a fresh one.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

I'm also concerned on this file. Please upload it for evaluation as follows.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\USBPlug.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

So at this point give me a fresh HJT log, results from the file scan, and let me know how you made out with this last step and how things are running now.

Thanks,
Dave
Hi Dave, thanks for all your efforts.
After the LOP uninstall (point 2) I didn't get the option to type any code and nothing appeared on my taskbar!

Here are the latest logs.

Hi John,

OK, let's have another run with Kaspersky as I instructed earlier, and let's also run AVG Anti-Spyware. You are probably thinking now, "why is he having me run so many scans?". Well, you have (hopefully had) a heavily infection machine. And at this point I would be asking you why you have not updated to SP2. Here's my take on this.
Windows SP2 is probably one of the most critical updates Microsoft has ever put out, as far as security is concerned. The problem is if you try to update to SP2 on an infected machine many problems can and probably will occur. So that's why I haven't pushed it yet. Let's get hopefully clean first then you can do that. For now:

Run Kaspersky online virus scanner as I described earlier in the thread.

Also,
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program. The program can still be used after 30 days but loses some of the features such as real time scanning.
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!
Post a new Kaspersky log and the log from the AVG scan. Also post a new HJT log. I've also asked you a several times along the way here How are things running now?. Please let me know that so we can hopefully move ahead with getting you up to SP2.

Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
Things appear to be running ok, I have not noticed anything peculiar happening recently.
I have attached the logs, it's looking good, you seem to have cracked it.
Thanks
John

Hi John,

Yes, things certainly look better from here and I'm glad to hear your PC is running better. A couple of things need to be addresed though.

1. It is crucial to update to Service Pack 2, it is probably the most important update the Microsoft has ever put out for WinXP and you are extremely vulnerable without it, Service Pack 2 significantly increases the security on your computer. I recommend that you do this update as soon as possible.

Link to Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Please update your computer then post back with how it went. If you have any problems please post back with as much detail as you can. This is needed because any problems updating to SP2 could indicate that there is still some infection on your system that we need to address.

2. This is not as critical as #1 but is still important for security reasons:
Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Make these updates, post a new HJT log, and let me know how things are running.

Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
I have loaded SP2 and updated the Java RTE.
The system appears to be starting up and running very slowly.
Is that to be expected with SP2 ?
I have attached the HJT Log below.
Thanks
John

Hi John,

Couple of questions. Do you use Casino-on-net at all to play games online, ect…? If so you can keep this next item in place but I would recommend removing it.

O9 - Extra button: Casino-on-Net - {3015DB92-158E-4b77-9020-85C8E311FBB5} - D:\PROG#5E9\CASI#2A3\Casino.exe (file missing)

I'm not sure on this next item and can't find too much information on it other than most experts in these forums removing it. Do you have any idea what it is? Again, if you are not sure what it is then I believe we can safely remove it.

O9 - Extra button: MainDownloads - {76DD9E77-F06C-4471-AB6C-CF03C5C6B5B0} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\MainDownloads (file missing)

If you decided to remove those items then do the following.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O9 - Extra button: Casino-on-Net - {3015DB92-158E-4b77-9020-85C8E311FBB5} - D:\PROG#5E9\CASI#2A3\Casino.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: MainDownloads - {76DD9E77-F06C-4471-AB6C-CF03C5C6B5B0} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\MainDownloads (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Use Windows Explorer to delete the following files/folders:

D:\PROG#5E9\CASI#2A3\Casino.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\MainDownloads

For your slow startup issue…SP2 does put a bit more strain on systems and may slow things down a little. But one thing I see is you have several programs running at startup. You may want to consider stopping them from running at startup if you don't use them. You appear to have MS Office, your camera software, and Adobe. Your DSL is also in there but I would leave that as it's likely needed.

If you are still having performance issues after all the suggestions I gave you earlier then I would next head over to PC Pit Stop and look through the forums there. They also have a test you can run and will provide some suggestions. You can post there also to see if there's anything else you could try, optimizing PC's is one of their specialties.

Regards and good luck,
Dave
No problem John, glad we were able to get this cleaned up…it was pretty bad. To prevent future re-infection I recommend reviewing the following:

In addition to your current protection you may want to consider these:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…mp;#entry257163

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Regards,
Dave
