when i log onto the internet using msn, my home page as been taken over by a message that says i have spyware. i have run ad aware se, spy-bot, ccleaner, and have run it in the safe mode. the message is still there. here is my hjt log.

Welcome to Tom Coyote, you do have a few issues going on that need to be fixed.

Lets do this first…

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis



Please download ComboFix by sUBs from either of these two locations

BleepingComputerComboFix
TechSupportForumComboFix
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a new HJT log please.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.


Let me see the Combofix log and a new HJT log please.

How are ya doing?? Combofix got rid of a Purity Infection but we still have a little more to do.

Download the Stand Alone Version of CWShredder to your desktop.
  • Open CWShredder
  • Check for Updates
  • Close out the program. <– Dont run it yet




    Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
    • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
    • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
    • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
    • Under Reports
    • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
    • Un-Select Only if threats were found
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.







    Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

    Boot your computer into Safemode
    • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
    • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
    • This will bring up a menu.
    • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
    • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

    Open CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click Fix and click OK at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click Next and then Exit .


Still in Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5




Download: DelDomains and save it to the desktop.
  • Close all open windows and your browser
  • Right Click DelDomains.inf and select > Install
  • Reboot your computer



Run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Just a few things to fix, you did very well :thumbup:

You missed these two entries so fix them with HJT.

Open AVG and go into the Quarantine folder and delete it all.




We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.


Look for this file and make sure its gone, its related to the Purity infection you had. If its still present and won't let you delete it, you will have to boot to safemode in order to delete it.

C:\Program Files\desktop weather <– this most times brings spyware with it, you will be better off uninstalling it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and download and install a legit program from the Weather Channel.

Ken, I deleted the files r1 and ro. I deleted the files in the avg. As for the windows\system32\wnstssv.exe, just checking to see where that would be, on c drive? as far as the www.acmenet.net, i have no idea what this is. I use msn.com through qwest for my internet, never heard of this. Thanks for all the help! Scott

Sorry Scott, I left off the C: Its most likely gone, this is just a double check to make sure. Right click on Start then click on Explore and Navigate to

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wnstssv.exe




Lets remove these with HJT, if you have any problems I am giving you the instructions to restore them with HJT.

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"

  • Reboot your computer

Good Morning Scott, :D

Lets do a few things.

1. What do you mean exactly when you state the Spyware still has control of your computer. There are 1000s of infections out there with all there own symptoms. If you could elaborate on exactly whats going on it would help me greatly to help you get rid of whatever it is that you have.



2.
There are infections around that are being written do hide from HJT so I need you to go to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe and right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a stick of red dynamite with a plunger ) and click on Rename and rename it to Analyze.exe




3.
Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.


Let me see a New HJT log with it renamed and the Smifraud log along with any comments that you have that can help me.

When I open my web browser, the message comes up with the following.

which usually follows my.porn-info-info/
the message says that I have spy ware and I need to have it deleted.
This is why I need help.

Good job :thumbup:

If you look at the Smitfraud log you will see you have all or part of the infection and that may explain the porn pop ups.


Lets run Option # 2, do it this way.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt





Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete Offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button.
  • Click Apply then OK.


Reboot normally.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.



Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.
