Hi everytime I start Opera web browser I get that the Cache4 folder is corrupt and unreadable I have no idea what this is and any help is appreciated. I am not sure if it is a HijackThis issue but I will get a HJT log. I don't understand how it is corrupt as I am using Opera web browser to post this so I have no idea why I am getting this error. Possibly because of a corrupt file inside Cache4? but I do not want to delete anything yet.

Thank you for your time,

Francois

Hello Barqers, Which version of Opera are you using? (Just curious... I'm an Opera user too.) If you go to Help-About, you'll get a page that lists all the paths that the browser uses. It seems like Opera's main cache folder is non-existent or has become corrupt. (it can happen at times). You may want to delete the contents of the folder and restart Opera. See if that fixes it. I had a similar problem with Mozilla way back... turns out the folder itself was not even there. So I was browsing with no cache. For those who don't know what cache is, it is the folder where the browser saves everything from web sites you view for subsequent quick retrieval. In IE it is referred to as "Temporary Internet Files" or TIF for short. In Opera and Mozilla, it is cache. You don't need cache to browse, but it does speed things up a bit especially when viewing sites with lots of images (like all the buttons and the skin here on TC). BTW, Your log looks mighty fine to me. Hope this helps,

Hi Galadriel I have done a couple steps. First I renamed the original cache4 folder to blah. Then I created a new cache4 browser I get no more corruption errors. Now I can browse fine and all that jazz I just cannot delete the original folder, no matter what I rename it. It says the directory is not empty. Yet I completely deleted all files in it. I went to tools>options and said show hidden files. I also unchecked the hide system files option and still I can't see a single file in that folder it just won't delete. ARG =\ Thank you for your time Galadriel Francois

First I'm glad to help. :)

Second, When you tried to delete the folder, did you close Opera completely before you did? If not, that may be why.

If you did close Opera and the folder still won't delete, I see two possible causes (there might be more, but those two I'm sure could be the case).
The first of those is that something in the cache was corrupt and causing some kind of bug in the File Allocation Table or Index. This could cause Windows to mess up and lock you out of doing anything with that folder. - Possible solution, run Checkdisk... I know it sounds weird, but checkdisk on XP has a lot of usefulness imo. It will check for integrity of the FAT and Indexes. If a problem is found, it should fix it. I don't know whether the folder would then be "freed" or not, but it is worth a shot.

The second cause could be because of a bad block or sector on the disk. Again, running checkdisk will tell you whether that is the case.

Alternatively, you could try using this to delete it. Be warned though, that this is an extremely powerful tool and should be used with caution. In other words, don't try deleting System32 with it... ;)

Okay I will try your tool because I see no other option. I close opera completely and I run atf cleaner by atribune to remove Opera's cache and then when I run checkdisk it opens command and I see a bunch of letters flash on the screen and then it closes. So either checkdisk is malfunctioning or it finds no error. I will try the unlocker tool and let you know how it goes. Thank you very much Francois

Okay I've tried unlocker and it says it deleted the folder yet it is still on my desktop and I still can not delete it >.<. Is this a virus or is it just something up with the integrity of the folder. Francois

By Checkdisk I meant using the error checking tool in the Drive Properties Window. Open "My Computer" and right click on the "C" drive (or whichever drive you have Windows installed on) and choose Properties. In the Tools Tab, click on Check Now. I recommend doing the auto fix errors. The scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors is a good idea but it will make the scan take much longer (depending on the size of the disk and the speed of the machine, it can take upwards of 45mins to run). If you selected auto-fix, it should tell you it cannot run checkdisk because it needs full write access to the drive and Windows restricts it. It'll ask whether you want to schedule a checkdisk on next restart of the machine. Just say yes and restart. Checkdisk will run and should restart the machine after it ends. It is quick to restart so you may not have time to see the info displayed before it does. When it does, you'll get another chance to see the results. Good luck, :wavey:

Was the folder locked? Unlocker should have shown you if it was...

The folder is on your desktop? How did it get there? Did you move it? As far as I know, the Cache4 folder should be in C:\documents and settings\yourusernamehere\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\cache4\ at least, that's where it is for me using Opera 9.1.

Yes to explain what I have done. I renamed the original cache4 folder blah then moved it to my desktop and then created a new cache4 folder and it worked. By the way the disk check found folders to be corrupt and it fixed them. Then I rebooted and I was able to delete the folder. Well I am off to bed I have a math exam tomorrow. Thank you very much for your help Galadriel Francois

I'm glad to hear Checkdisk fixed the problem. :D I've used checkdisk in various problematic situations... I've found it to be a good step to try when troubleshooting something like this. :) Good luck with your exam! Regards,

Yeah I didn't know that checkdisk was very usefull, but it prooved to be very useful in this case. Just got back from my exam and I'm pretty sure my mark is 95-100% =P math is too easy. Anyways hopefully anyone reading this thread will realise checkdisk works in situations like this, as I have just found that out. Thank you once again Galadriel François

Hi I just want to let anyone reading this thread know that unlocker is a very very usefull tool. I downloaded and was going to get rid of it, but everytime I run into a file that "can't be deleted" I use this tool. Also like Galadriel said it is a very powerful tool so do not try and delete a file that is required by windows or any other program to run. This will cause either windows to not be able to start or corrupt the program you would try to run. Overall though this tool is A++. Thank you Galadriel Francois EDIT -- By the way the reason I got Opera web browser is because of your blog. Thanks for convincing me to try it. Perfect browser, love the widgets and all the themes. Way more customizable than firefox and can't even compare to Internet Explorer.
