Hi masked.

Welcome to Tom Coyote forums!

SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Please download SmitFraudFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Smitfraud.exe - this will create a SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Open the folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter - a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Do not run any of the other options at this stage.

Please copy/paste the content of the report (c:\rapport.txt) into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi masked.

You are running HijackThis from within its zip folder. In order to save backups, it must be in its own folder. Create a folder on your C: drive called C:\HJT:
  • Click on Start > My Computer
  • Double-click on your Local Disk (usually C)
  • Right-click on the space on the right hand side and select New then Folder
  • Rename the folder HJT
Unzip HiJackThis into this folder. Please delete the old zip file so it can't be used.

————————————————————

Once you've got HijackThis safely in its own folder, I need you to download a couple of programs.

—————————————————————–

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.

Do not use it yet.

—————————————————————-

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

—————————————————————

You need to reboot your computer in Safe Mode for the next step. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
————————————————————-

Open the SmitFraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press 'Enter' to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : 'Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?'; answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter' in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter'.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode (as above).

————————————————————

Run ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©:
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected

    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
—————————————————-

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)

    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

————————————————————

Open the SmitFraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question 'Restore Trusted Zone ?' by typing Y and hit Enter.

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The SmitFraudFix report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log
Thanks again, I have done the folder create and downloaded the applications. I am away and dont have access to a printer so I need to pause at this point so I dont screw it up. I will be back again saturday since i fly home tomorrow.
I have done all steps and am now running the AVG program. But it has now been running for an hour and seems to cant get past the 31st object in the memory processes. I tried to cancel to start over but it seems that only the pause resume features work.
Hi masked.

Pause the program. If the Cancel button doesn't work, close the program by clicking on the red "x" top-right corner. If this doesn't work press Ctl+Alt+Delete, click on the Applications tab, select AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the End Task button. Try to run the scan again. If this doesn't work, then I suggest that you uninstall then re-install the program and try again.

If you still can't run the scan, let me know and we'll try something else.
I had to crtl alt del to stop it. since i am in safe mode I dont get the full screen. I will uninstall the avg and re install. this is suppose to run in safe mode right?
It's best to run it in safe mode, but not essential. Running in safe mode just means that it is less likely to have problems removing bad files. Try it in normal mode. The main thing is to get the scan done. :)
OK here are the reports.

It appears too that my home page is not being redirected. Am I fixed??

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi masked.

It appears too that my home page is not being redirected. Am I fixed??

Nearly! :) We've still got a few things to do, but the main infection has gone. First there are a couple of programs that we term 'optional fixes'. Here is some information about the programs. It is your decision whether to uninstall them, or not.

Optional Fixes

MyWebSearch

You are running MyWebSearch. Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. My Web Search also known as the My Way Speedbar is the Internet Explorer toolbar part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, Cursor Mania, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal. The toolbar allows easy access to search engine results and a 404 Error Redirector called My Total Search among other things to your browser. This is not to be confused with the IBIS Web Search toolbar. MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.

Although none of these products claim to be spyware, they do slow your computer down. All of the products use cookies to track usage, although they claim not to use cookies or anything else to track personally identifiable information. That being said, I would still recommend uninstalling the toolbar and other Fun Web Products if you feel your computer runs better without them. They are found by most spyware removal tools such as Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, although they are deemed spyware safe by Aluria Software who created a Spyware SAFE Certification.

To uninstall MyWebSearch:
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall MyWebSearch
  • Reboot the computer
  • Delete this folder (if found): C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
These are the items to fix in HijackThis (add them to the list below, if you are removing the program):

O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\2.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNxdm97394US

Wild Tangent

You are using Wild Tangent. It is not malware, but is sometimes thought to bring malware along. Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although it’s not technically considered spyware, it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including:

  • Operating System Version
  • CPU Type and Speed
  • Memory Amount
  • Video Card type and Driver Version
  • Sound Card type and Driver Version
  • DirectX Version
  • It is also a MAJOR resource hog.

To uninstall Wild Tangent:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Wild Tangent, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  • Delete this folder (if found): C:\Program Files\WildTangent\
This is the item to fix in HijackThis (add it to the list below if you are removing the program):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DDCActiveMenu] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\DDC\ActiveMenu\DDCActiveMenu.exe" -boot

HijackThis Fix

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {16BF42FD-CA0A-4f48-819D-B0343254DD67} - file://C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\System\Temp\mypoints_script0.htm (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/funwe…up1.0.0.8-2.cab
O16 - DPF: {22E5705C-991A-4646-9053-A9525CA7222A} - http://www.topmoxie.com/external/builds/mypoints/mpmoxie.cab

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. Click on Start then My Computer, find the following folder (highlighted in red) and delete it, if present: C:\Program Files\MyPointsPointAlert\

Please also check that this folder has gone (delete it if found): C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Object\

Please post a new HijackThis log, as a reply to this thread.

Hi masked.

Congratulations - your HijackThis log is clean! :)

You can delete SmifraudFix, from your desktop, and its report (c:\rapport.txt). It would also be a good idea to delete the following SmitfraudFix file: C:\Windows\System32\process.exe. I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware as these are useful programs.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

In your first post you said that your laptop had Windows XP SP2. According to your HijackThis log, you only have SP1. I strongly recommend that you update your version of Windows XP to Service Pack 2 as soon as possible. You can download it, or order the CD, from here.

This is my standard 'speech' once someone's computer is clean. Forgive me if you already do some, or all, of the following.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to 'Disable'
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to 'Disable'
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to 'Prompt'
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the OK button to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that you have a good anti-virus program running on your computer. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Without one, you are wide-open to infection. Two good ones are Avast and AVG. Both are free, for personal use.
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you can). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Kerio and Zone Alarm are both good and have a free version.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • If they are not already present, I would recommend that you download and install some, or all, of the following programs (all free):
    • Spybot - Search and Destroy -Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer, alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Download and install Ad-Aware SE Personal. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and websites into your Internet Explorer and/or Firefox browser settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all of these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.
