Hi whyspyware and welcome to the forums here at Tom Coyote.

I'm a little reluctant to give you any advice as it appears this machine is on a corporate network or in a work environment, and there should be IT staff that would support it. My observations are based on Software installed and restrictions that have been set. I will recommend there are a couple of trojan related BHO's that can certainly be fixed. I will advise you on that. If there is IT staff available I would also get them involved ASAP as there may be something else going on. If not then let me know what the situation is.

For now:

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {73364D99-1240-4dff-B12A-67E448373148} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6mons.dll
O2 - BHO: Still Image - {E8656DAF-0229-BA16-E97D-31557D631863} - C:\WINDOWS\system\mtstct32.dll

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

One of those files mtstct32.dll is related to a backdoor trojan, so there may be other things hiding that we can't see. Again, these BHO's are certainly OK to remove, but I would get some professional IT help if you are in this environment.

Regards,
Dave
Apologies. I should have explained it is a laptop provided by my workplace that I use outside the office but isn't connected to any network, although it can do should I take the laptop into work. I haven't actually had the need to do that yet, and refuse to do so anyway until this problem is sorted. In short, I use it for work at home. I did as requested and await the next step.
OK whyspyware, I understand. Post a fresh HJT log and let me know how it's running at this point. I will do a bit more research after reviewing your new log and advise some other scans if needed. Regards, Dave
Well, the IE home page no longer defaults to Google, and I have put in a fair few searches and none seem to be redirecting. However, the computer seems to take even longer than before to startup, and sometimes programs such as ZoneAlarm take even longer before they start.

Hi,

Good to hear the redirects are gone. Poor performance can be caused by a large number of things. Let's first run a scan and then we'll go from there. I would also advise you to take the laptop into work and have it checked out if possible.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot
  • Post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
Dave
I do.. sorry it's been a bit long but I haven't been able to do the last scan yet. I will be trying it in the next 24 hours and will get back to you. Thanks.
Okay I did as requested. It found nothing with the first scan of the memory, and of the second on the hard disk it found a fair few files but managed to delete them all.

Here are the two logs.

Hi,

Your log appears to be clean but I'm still concerned about that Trojan that I believe was/or still is present. This is a tool I should have had you run earlier in the fix. But let's run it now.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Dave

OK, SD Fix looks like it did it's thing. Let's run another scan.

Please go Here and do an online scan. Let it fix any infections.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.

Dave
