TATE!!! Thanks for the reply. I am trying to clean up my fiancees desktop computer this time. I did all the preliminary stuff you suggest before posting (i.e. Spybot,Adware,ATF,etc). I was not able to download to online scan maybe because the computer has Windows ME? It looked like that scanner was only for 2000 and XP. I also deleted a lot of the programs we didnt need. Anyways, I did all that but the computer still starts to suffer the longer I am on it. The cursor, for instance, will begin to lock up and the computers reaction time when I click on things slows. The computer is great right when you start it up, but its performance suffers the longer you are on it. I then have to shut everything down and wait 20 seconds or so after I click the START button to shut down the computer properly. It is still doing it. By the way, the new laptop I purchased 6 months ago had problems and the O/S system shut down on me a couple days ago. Data Doctors installed EZ Antivirus and EZ Pest Patrol when I first bought it, but I followed the instructions you had me do on Adware (adjustments before scanning) and it picked up 14 files that the EZ didnt protect from. ATF also cleaned out a ton of stuff. I am wondering if the EZ software is really any good or its just a conspiracy to keep Data Doctors in business…hmmm…. Thanks for any help Tate, you are the man! Scott
I suggest you do this:

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

I suggest you do this:
Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\taskmon.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Tate, One thing I did notice is that I went back to trying to run the Disk Defragmenter, it 'looks' like its running but it stays at '0%.' Its been on for at least an hour. Any suggestions? Thanks again - S
Try this first. Then try defrag

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.
No Tate, its still not working. The 'bricks' are moving and forming the wall so it looks like its running but it still stays at 0%. The ATF cleaner said it was clean.
Try running Scandisk WINDOWS ME SCANDISK Click Start Click Run and type scandisk in the run box Click ok Within the scandisk window select the drive that you wish to be checked. Choose the option between standard and through. It is recommended you run standard first, if you encounter issues with scandisk then run the through scan. Finally click start to begin scandisk.
Tate, I started the standard scan on ScanDisk and it gives me the following message: ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable ScanDisk to finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this warning? I did not have any other programs or browsers up when I attempted to run ScanDisk.

ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable ScanDisk to finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this warning?

Answer No and let it keep running. This can take a long time to run and fix.
Tate, I left the computer on all day and late into the evening and ScanDisk continued to be stuck. I clicked NO as you instructed but it just kept getting stuck.
Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done.
When the menu appears, select Command Prompt only. Tap enter.

At the command prompt C:\
Type in Chkdsk /F <–Note the space, it needs to be there.
That should scan the disk for any bad sectors and repair them.

When finished, reboot and try Scandisk again. If still no luck, reboot Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done.
