Please help. Something called BraveSentry popped up on my taskbar and started doing a spyware scan. This is not my usual program so I attempted to shut it down. A series of popups ensued stating that the program HAD to scan for spyware because I was infected.

Now I cannot click on buttons in Windows Explorer, meaning I can't log into many sites. For example, I can't search Google because clicking the button does nothing. I sometimes cannot open programs from my quick launch taskbar or my desktop - I had to go into programs folder to open Opera and find this site using it instead of Explorer.

I rebooted into safe mode and scanned using AdAware and SpyBot, but the problem persists.

I am using Windows XP

Hello Garney :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote

Lets do few things…always run HJT in Normal windows as running it in Safemode does not show me the whole picture.

DO THIS FIRST
Your Hijackthis program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix.
  • just go to C:\ Program Files and create a new folder and name it Hijackthis .
  • Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
  • Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
  • Now HJT should reside in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe
Please do not proceed until you have moved HJT

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Just run Option #1

Let me see the Smitfraud report and a new HJT log please.
Thank you very much for responding! I moved my HJT to its own folder and followed your steps. My system is running so very slow just changing between Opera and notepad.

Here are the logs.

Garney :D

You have many infections on this computer, this is not a case of just picking up a virus, you have many, at least 9 I can see, you have viruses, trojans and a possible Rootkit, these are very serious infections that compromise your system. I would not do any online banking or access any site that requires a credit card as what you have has the capability of stealing them from you.

The people that write this garbage are not very nice, and even after your clean there is a chance it could leave some damage as some of this stuff overwrites legit windows files.

After we try and get you clean, if you continue your poor surfing habits your just going to keep getting infected over and over again.

After we are done you also need to update your Operating System to Service Pack 2, it will help keep a lot of this stuff out.

I am going to try and brake this up in segments so as not to overwhelm you .

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Update your Java as this may be letting some of this stuff in.
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.
Leave it set this way until we are done.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE

  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Post the log from Smitfraud fix, the AVG Spyware log and a New HJT log please, there are still other major infections we need to work on.
Sorry about all this mess. I had McAfee for quite a long time, and recently it became… corrupted? I'm not really certain what happened to it, but it stopped working. I didn't know about AVG until a few days ago when the major lag started - after browsing a site I normally don't visit. The rest of the errors I chalked up to my system being rather old and cantankerous - such as the java problem and being unable to watch certain videos.

I'm quite pleased with how AVG has performed so far. Is paying for their services worth it past the free trial? I was paying for McAfee and I'm rather upset about that, but I would gladly pay for protection to keep this from happening again.

Hi Ken, I am a friend of Garney's. She just called me and asked me to come on-line. She's done all that you told her to. But when she tries to boot her computer in normal mode, it keeps restarting. She is able to boot it into Safe Mode. Please let us know what we can do as soon as possible. Thanks, CheetaCat
cheetacat

I dont know what she has done to cause this, she has a very heavily infected computer that causes all kinds of havoc.

"Win XP and Win 2000 have a default setting to restart at just about any error. It makes things difficult to analyze when it blows through and restarts the computer.
Go to Start / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings. Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure."

See if this helps
Auto restarting is off. Thank you for replying to Cheeta.

As far as Anti Virus software, I have been around computers since windows 95 and have never been a fan of Mcafee. They are about to discontinue AVG for the paid version, if there Anti Virus is as good as there spyware program I would go with it.

Remove this with HJT.
