Everytime I click on hijack this to do a scan, my computer makes everything disappear so that I can't use it.
It's as though it senses my intentions to get rid of some command lines and it won't let me.
Please help.

Here are a couple of steps to try and run HijackThis. Follow them in order. If one step doesn't work, continue to the next step:
Step # 1
Rename HijackThis.exe to H.exe. Try a scan. If it works, post the log back here. If not, proceed to the next step.
Step # 2
Go to this link and download the 1.98 version of HijackThis.exe:
http:/www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
Try a scan. If it works, post the log back here. If not, proceed to the next step.
Step # 3
Click here and download Itty Bitty Process Manager (IBProcMan.zip): http://www.merijn.org/files/ibprocman.zip .
Unzip it to it's own directory and try running it - it will provide a 'taskmanager' like process viewer in which you can stop running processes. Don't stop any yet, just list all that it has so I can check them and give advice. Post the list back here.

Your suggestions, especially the first one, were very creative.
However, as soon as I highlited the folder or existing file name to change it, the cwssvchost32 virus made everything on the screen disappear. It happens so fast, I don't have enough time to take a scan!!
Can safe mode buy us more time?

Try all the steps I gave in safe mode, it's possible one of them will work in safe mode
Also please do the following:
Please download CleanX-II.exe
Also please do the following:
Please download CleanX-II.exe
- Double click CleanX-II.exe then follow the prompts.
- Reboot and post the log that it creates.

I was able to delete the items you mentioned and scan a new log, but I think the virus is still resurrecting itself.
This was a struggle to get this posted. Things were disappearing and my computer was locking up just as I was ready to post this new log.
I can't activate Kaspersky in normal mode. Svchost and smartsearch cws virus, won't let me.
Kaspersky web page doesn't come up in safe mode as you describe.
There never was an "accept "option and any of the directions after this point.

I don't see anything in the Hijackthis log so we need to look a little deeper
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
If combofix fails to run in normal mode please run it in safe mode

My computer will not let me connect to tomcoyote.org!!!!
After running cwshredder v 2.14, it finds and removes 2 coolwebsearch variants.
They are cws.smartsearch of which there are 4 variants and cws.svchost32.
According to cwshredder.net, fixing this hijack involved using a process killer, lots of registry editing and deleting a few files.
The file is always running and reinstalls the hijack to smartsearch.ws every 10 seconds!!!
Even safe mode isn't safe to use without this variant stopping me from doing as you ask.
I have seen something mentioned called pepimk's coolwwwsearch.smartkiller.
What else can we do? This thing has stolen my computer and I can't get control of it back!
I think I'm losing it!!!

The latest version of CWshredder is 2.19, download it here: http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe
and run it
Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say Ok.
If no warning….
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked… leave everything checked and uncheck the Registry box. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.
Click the >>> tab. This will open up all available tabs for you.
Click the Autostart tab then the scan button. Once its done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.
Let me know how you get on with this and if possible post the GMER logs.

Thank You.
I have saved all of the files to my usb flash drive and will try to download them to my computer from it.
This way I won't have to use an internet connection and be redirected to another website.
Maybe the cws variant won't interrupt that way.
My daughter is doing her homework on the troubled computer so I may not have any results until tommorrow.

What a difference a day makes!!
After downloading all of your previous suggested files to my usb flash drive, I was able to successfully copy them to a folder on my hard drive.
Then I activated the execution files , ran the scans, and saved the log reports, all in normal mode. The browser hijacker or cws variant did not interfear since there was no internet connection involved!!
After running cwshredder version 2.19 and all of your suggested process killers, I feel convinced that the variants have been removed and I have regained control of my computer!!!
I would also like to show you a list of my anti spyware software and see if there is some redundancy in software packages that are doing the same things and can be eliminated.
Is this the right forum for that?
Here are most of the log reports you requested:

I didn't run the GMER.zip file so as to avoid crashing my computer.
Thanks soo much for being there and giving me the confidence to keep persevering with this problem.
Whoever writes these viruses are the real terrorists and they should be put in Gitanamo Bay Prison.

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.
My recommendation is you uninstall it.
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 .
To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:
You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software.
Or you can get the manual download here:
Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there
Go ahead and post the list
- Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
- If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
My recommendation is you uninstall it.

I would also like to show you a list of my anti spyware software and see if there is some redundancy in software packages that are doing the same things and can be eliminated.
Is this the right forum for that?
Go ahead and post the list

I deleted the P2P Sun Java Runtime Environemnt 5.0 update 6 and also SE, v1.42.03
I downloaded and ran Kaspersky Online Scanner and saved the report.
It found 2 viruses and 16 incidents.

Javacools Spyware Blaster
MVPS Hosts
IE-Spyad
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA)
Are there conflicts or redundancy here?
What should I add or delete in order to optimize?
random/random
The stuff Kaspersky found was all in symantec's quarantine
There shouldn't be any problem with conflicts
These:
Javacools Spyware Blaster
MVPS Hosts
IE-Spyad
Are all good to download
This:
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA)
Is only really for business use
I would delete this, because they're usually only used for specific infections:
CWShredder 2.19
Ibprocman 1.04.0
CleanX-II 6.05.30
Combo Fix 000
Stinger 2.6.0
