I am not an advanced user but have tried to clean my system with a registered, updated TrendMicro program to no avail. I just ran Hijackthis and am attaching the log in this thread. Thank you so much for your help.
My computer has slowed down significantly is stalling on loading programs and reports websites we don't try to access. There are multiple unknown and repeat processes running under the Task Manager. Have run TrendMicro and it doesn't come up with anything that really needs fixing.

Hi budapestgeorge.

Welcome to TomCoyote forums! I'm sorry that you've had to wait for a response. As it's been a few days since you posted, I need to see an up-to-date HijackThis log.

Important: Your HijackThis log is very hard to read. Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad - (click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap)

————————————————–

Unzip HijackThis

You are running HijackThis fro its zip file. It's important that HijackThis runs from within its own folder in order to save backups. Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. You can do this by going to Start > My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Unzip hijackthis.zip into this folder. Open the new folder (C:\HJT\) and rename HijackThis.exe as NoHide.exe. Create a shortcut to NoHide.exe on your desktop. Please delete the zip file once this has been done.

————————————————-

HijackThis Startup List

Please open HijackThis
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • Click on Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click on Save List… (towards the bottom right)
  • Save the text file to a convenient location
——————————————

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The HijackThis Startup List
  • A new HijackThis log
Hi Beynac-
Thanks for your help. I don't know if you need to know this but IE keeps trying to access a website that begins with 88.80.5.21/ and I can't figure out what it is. These logs were run in normal Windows operating mode/startup. Let me know if I need to do that differently. Thanks again. Your help is very valuable.
Budapest George

Hi Budapest George.

I have to warn you that this could be a nasty one. I suggest that you backup all documents, photographs and other important data. Do not include any program files in the backup (e.g. xxx.exe).

Download WinPFind2.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind2 on your desktop.
  • Open the WinPFind2 folder and double-click on winpfind2.exe to start the program.
  • Keep the standard settings.
  • In the AddOn Options group (on the right-hand side) click the checkboxes for:
    • awf.def
    • HKCU_IEDesktop.def
    • Jobs.def
    • Policies.def

  • When the scans are complete click the Simple Report button in the lower right-hand corner to create a report file. Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Copy the report and paste it as a reply to this thread.
Thanks for the warning. I will back some things up and send you that log soon. It will take a minute to back things up. I appreciate your patience and will get back as soon as I can. BG
Hi Budapest George.

Let's try a different tool.

Please download FindAWF from: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe and save it on your desktop. Double-click on the file to run it. It will produce a report (awf.txt). Please post that report as a reply to this thread.

Note: If a DOS window does not stay open throughout the search (approx a minute), you need to change how the program runs:
  • Locate the file
  • Right-click and select Properties
  • Select Compatibility and select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Windows ME and click OK.
  • The tool should now work.
Please post the FindAWF report and a new HijackThis log. Let me know if you have any problems.
Hey there Beynac-
This program worked but it took a while to finish. Here is the report. Find the HijackThis Log following…Thanks.

Hi Budapest George.

It is a nasty one. I suggest that you disconnect the computer from the internet and do not use it, except for the things we need to do to fix it. There's quite a lot to do. Take it one step at a time and do everything in the order given. If you have any questions or problems, stop and ask me.

Download Programs

#1: Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.

#2: Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

#3: Download these files to your Desktop. Right-click and select Save Link As (in Firefox) or Save Target As (in IE) to download them.
  • http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ResetProtocolDefaults.reg
Don't do anything with them yet.

#4: Download Erunt to your desktop from here
  • Double-click on the file to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt
  • Accept the defaults for running a backup
  • Erunt will then backup your registry

————————————————-

HijackThis Fix

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0CB66BA8-5E1F-4963-93D1-E1D6B78FE9A2} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dpwsock] C:\WINDOWS\System32\dpwsock.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winpack] C:\WINDOWS\System32\winpack.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [FlashPlayerUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash\GetFlash.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. First we need to make sure that you can see all of the files.
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
——————————————————

Reboot into Safe Mode

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. It would therefore be a good idea for you to print these instructions.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
—————————————————-

Run Batch File, Registry Fix etc.

Make sure that all windows are closed. On the Desktop:
  • Double-click on beynac.bat.
  • Double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say Yes.
  • Right-click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. (You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal).
  • Right-click on ResetProtocolDefaults.reg and select Merge.
  • Click OK at the prompt.
—————————————————-

Run ATF Cleaner

Make sure that all browser windows are closed and then double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.

Hi Budapest George.

Well done! :)

We're getting there. You had a 'file infecter'. This replaces some program files, run at startup, with its own infected files. Fortunately for us, it backs the original files up first! We've removed the malware, deleted the infected program files and replaced them with the backup copies.

———————————————————–

Restoring Internet Security Settings

We need to reset the defaults for Internet Explorer. Please do the following for all users of the computer.
  • Close all Internet Explorer windows.
  • Open Control Panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel
  • Double-click the Internet Options icon.
  • In the Internet Properties window, click the Security tab.
  • For each Web content zone, click on the Default Level button to set each zone to the default setting.
  • Click OK.
———————————————————-

FindAWF

Please run FindAWF again and post the report (awf.txt) as a reply to this thread. This is to check that the infected files have all been successfully replaced.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

I would like you to run an online scan to make sure that there is nothing else lurking.

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as… button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
—————————————————–

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The FindAWF report
  • The Kaspersky report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know how your computer is running now. Have all the symptoms, that you mentioned, gone?
Hey there- glad for the encouragement. Computer doesn't seem to be accessing websites on its own right now, but still more sluggish than usual. Thanks again.
Here are the reports:

Hi Budapest George.

The FindAWF report shows that the corrupted files have all been replaced. We're making very good progress. :) There's some tidying up to do and I want to run a couple more checks. I also want to run another scan (ComboFix), as your computer is still running slower than normal. There's rather a lot to do again, but take your time - this is hopefully the last lap!

I'm a bit concerned that ATF Cleaner does not appear to have got rid of all your temporary files. We need to make sure that these files are cleared for all users.

Download CCleaner from here.

NOTE: CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which is checkmarked by default during the installation. If you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option.
  • Make sure that all windows are closed
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
    • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep pane.
  • Go into Options > Advanced deselect\uncheck 'Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours'
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Issues' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
Please make sure that you run this program while logged in as "dave and michelle" and also as "Sweet Pea".

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE). You have, at the least:
    • j2re1.4.2_06
    • jre1.5.0_05
    • jre1.5.0_06
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
——————————————————

Folder Delete/Check

We need to delete the 'bak' folders created by the malware and check that some other folders and files are not on the computer.Click on Start then My Computer, find the following folders (highlighted in red) and delete them, if present. Please let me know if there are any problems with this.
  • C:\Program Files\iTunes\bak\
  • C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\
  • C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\bak\
  • C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\bak\
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\bak\
  • C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\bak\
Find this folder "C:\Documents and Settings\dave and michelle\Local Settings\Temp\". Check that it is empty. Delete any files or folders in it, but do not delete the folder itself.

——————————————————–

Check Registry Entries

Select the contents of the Code Box below, right-click and copy it, then paste into Notepad.

@echo off
regedit /e mecheck.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges"
regedit /e zone.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\2"
del regcheck.bat
  • Still in Notepad, go to Format (upper menu bar) and untick Word Wrap
  • Go to File (upper menu bar), and select: Save as
  • In the Save as prompt:
    • Save in: Desktop
    • File Name: regcheck.bat
    • Save as Type: All files
    • Click: Save
  • Exit out of Notepad.
On the Desktop, double-click on regcheck.bat. This should open two text files (mecheck.txt and zone.txt) on your desktop. Please post the contents of these as a reply to this post.

———————————————————–

ComboFix by sUBs
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Close all open windows.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please split the log into separate posts to ensure that they don't get cut off. It is important that I see the full log.

———————————————————–

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The contents of mecheck.txt and zone.txt
  • The ComboFix report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know if you have any problems with the above.
Hi Beynac-
Sorry it took me so long. Got it all done though. Only problem was in the "C:\Documents and Settings\dave and michelle\Local Settings\Temp\". Everything deleted except for five files that gave an error message that read "Cannot Delete ____________. It is being used by another person or program." The files were me_LVfbEZymKAtST1E, me_kLQK6Ae9t2RzwPU, me_ipOUHiS33efi5OA, me_b1nQ2hO6jYMDVhS, and me_8S5tXNxkeTVwAwb. They seem to have been created around the time I did the Java Runtime 6 installation, so I am guessing that they are harmless but figured I'd let you know about them anyway.
The computer seems to be running pretty well, although I haven't been using it much except to work on these fixes. Anyway, here are the logs. I know I keep saying it but thank you so much for your help. I am very grateful.
