Hibernation and standby stopped functioning a couply of months ago, around the time I was having troubles with a browser hijack.
I have a clean system now(thank's LDTate) but the persistant problem with these functions.
At the time my system was infected I was running Nod32 trial version, then during the initial clean up I used Avg and SbybotSD. I still had the problem so I was talked into NortonIS <_< by a sales bloke telling me it was the best. It also didn't remove the problem.
Every time I tried to get rid of the obvious program in add/remove it would restart before it did. So in safe mode I managed to unhide the program in the folder and then delete it.
Hibernation and stanby were lost after virus scans and due to the fact that I tried a few Antivirus programs I deleted the quarantined items these programs had saved(obviously a bad move ) leaving me with no backups.
The symptoms are;
After hibernation the restarting windows black screen and it freezes at the end of the progress bar.
After standby the hd and fan fire up but the screen stays off, then the hd and fan stop And I'm left with nothing but the power indicator light lit up.
All power/monitor settings seem fine so I belive that something important has been deleted. Anyone have any ideas?
Thank's in advance.

Before you go to the trouble of precision diagnostice and specific repair, consider the following:
Run CHKDSK /R from your Recovery Console
Run FIXBoot from your Recovery Console
Check Disk in XP
In BIOS, Set the order to boot from the CD Rom 1st and the Hard drive 2nd.
Put your Windows CD in the tray, then "Exit with Saving" the settings (far right tab)
1. Boot with your windows CD
It will take some time as the CD loads various files
2. Type R to Enter the Recovery Console
3. Enter the Administrator password (if there is one)
4. Type: chkdsk c: /r and press Enter <<
5. Once completed (if no errors of unrecovery) Type: chkdsk c: /p and press Enter
6. Type: fixboot c: and press Enter
You’ll get a script asking if you are sure you wish to write a new boot sector to C:, Type y (for yes)
You’ll get a script stating that a new boot sector has been written.
7. At the prompt, type (exit) to Boot Normally
*** You may need to change your Boot Order via BIOS in order to accomplish the above.
then use BIOS again to return your Boot Order as you previously had it.
Reboot
In Normal Mode
Run System File Checker
Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow <——— notice the space between "c" and "/"

Problems coming out of Hibernate and/or Standby can be caused by a variety of problems.
You can run CHKDSK /r from a command line, as follows:
Start - Run - (type)chkdsk /r - Enter
Same for FixBoot
Start - Run - (type)fixboot - Enter - answer affirmative that you want to overwrite/make the changes
SFC only runs from Normal, so you'll be alright there.
The difficulty "may" emerge if your machine has not been configured to recognize the D:\i386 Windows Operating System location on your backup Partition. Or if that D:\i386 does not have all of the required files. (sometines pre-installed setups short-change the owner) hope not, but it happens.
Keep your fingers crossed.
You may also find that you can enter Recovery Console from your Boot Menu by rebooting your machine and immediately begin tapping F8 until the Master Boot Menu appears.
If Recovery Console appears in the list, Select it to run CHKDSK /R and FIXBOOT.
CAUTION: **********SYSTEM RECOVERY "is not" the same as Recovery Console.
If you enter SYSTEM RECOVERY your options will probably be limited to a Repair Installation or a complete Reformat - Reinstall…………… You don't want that.

Hi Guys,
I ran chkdsk/r and it corrected cross-link 42242.
Everything else was ok.
Can't find FixBoot, I think that I have been short changed.
Any other options?
Hi,
Try and run the commands from the Recovery Console, if you haven't got the Windows XP installation disc then it's usually best to either borrow one or (as a last resort) make one!
Borrowing one is a lot easier, so ask around your chums, someone is bound to come up trumps!

I'm back at it! I've been busy for a while.
I ran chkdsk and fixboot from the recovery console. Also ran system file checker.
No luck!!
I havn't found anything that works yet.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.
