Ok, I've got some kind of adware/spyware/malware/virus/rootkit (sure hope not the latter) on my desktop PC. AVG antivirus will consistently find various infected objects, usually in the \Temporary Internet Files folder. I'll heal them or move the to the virus vault to no avail. Spybot S&D will pick up one or two instances of malware, but Adaware SE & A-Squared don't detect anything. I'm using ZoneAlarm and something seems to be circumventing it; I unplugged the ethernet cable from my computer, turned on internet lock, and Windows still tells me "No connection to the internet available, work offline?" every minute or so. Anyway, here's my hijackthis log; I hope you all can help!
By the way, I have the following programs running (that I want to keep running): Unlocker Assistant, Daemon Tools (Virtual DAEMON manager 4.something),HP print/scan/fax software, E-trust (ZoneAlarm rebrand) firewall, AVG antivirus, Diskeeper Pro Premium, Folding at Home distributed computing software, aside from the usual stuff. I don't know why I have the VIA RAID tool running still, I do have a VIA chipset but don't have a RAID array on my PC and should probably remove that from starting up just out of general principles. Same with MS Messenger, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Hi bpb and welcome to the forums here at TC.

You appear to have a Vundo infection.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Hey, and thanks for your reply! I was reading another post on this forum about vundo and figured out how to fix it - I had to run vundo, ATF-cleaner, etc. but my problem seemed to be with: O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcbxyv - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ddcbxyv.dll O20 - Winlogon Notify: winhab32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winhab32.dll My PC is running fine now - Spybot S&D & AVG antivirus don't pick anything up and I don't get any requests to work offline with my ethernet cable unplugged. Thanks for your help!
Hi bpb, Glad to hear things are running better. Yes, those 2 entries along with another are a clear indication of a Vundo infection. You may want to still post a fresh HJT log to make sure everything else is cleaned up. It's up to you. Regards, Dave

Hi bpb, Yes, it appears Vundo is back. I would like you to run Vundofix again as I instructed in my earlier post to you. Please post back the contents of that log along with a new HJT log. Dave
Also, I would like you to do this:

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\DOCUME~1\BRIANP~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\I.exe<–File

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

HI bpb, The HJT log appears clean. How are things running now? Have you had a chance to run the scan and upload the file. Although I don't see that file (I.exe) in your log anymore  So not sure what's happening at this point. Let me know when you get a chance. Dave
Here is a somewhat edited log from the Kaspersky scan. Most of the files listed in the log were "Object is locked" & therefore "skipped". This is because I use NTFS to encrypt some sensitive files (mostly backup files from my laptop which I use for work - nothing mission critical at this point). All the encrypted files show up as locked & skipped, and I removed the ones that weren't seemingly relevant to this scan. ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Saturday, January 20, 2007 2:21:56 PM Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 5.0.83.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 20/01/2007 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 260433 ——————————————————————————- Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: extended Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - By the way, what is the C:\DOCUME~1\BRIANP~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\I.exe<–File anyway? I mean, what program generated/installed this file? I don't see it in my directory structure (I've enabled view hidden/system files).
Hi bpb,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been going non-stop. That file may or may not be bad, that is why I asked you to upload it. Not something to be to concerned about as it was in your temp folders anyway. Many of the items that Kaspersky found were in your restore points. If things are still running well then let's go ahead and clean those out and set a fresh one. I also recommend you run ATF Cleaner at this point to help clean things up.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Reboot if you haven't already and post a new HJT log and let me know how things are running.

Dave
Alright, done and here's the log; things seem to be running ok…

That's great bpb,

To help keep things clean in the future I recommend the following, along with updating and running your current protection.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Dave
