Please help…

Thanks!
Hello and Welcome to the forum. I suggest you do this: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove." See if that does the trick.
Uninstalled IE7.. but the problem persists. svchost and explorer keep taking up too much memory. Plus the task bar menu keeps changing to an odd gray from blue and back. And now, the internet has slowed down.. real slow.. took me almost half an hour to get to this forum.. please help..
Your log isn't showing anything bad.
What did you turn off using Msconfig?

I see you already have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Run it like this:
  • double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select " "Quarantine" .".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.
Ran the AVG Anti-Spyware in the Safe mode and then booted back to normal.

Here is the report:

Well the good news is that I am able to connect back to the Internet in the normal mode.. and the computer is comparatively faster now and the taskbar hasn't changed its colour either! :-)

And oh by the way - i had used Msconfig to stop the printer services running at startup.

So I guess whatever was causing the problem is okay now.

A million thanks!
Have a good day!
Nikki
You can shut this one off also with msconfig. Real Player update.
Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

You can also uninstall AVG Anti-Spyware using Add/Remove Programs if you want.

Log looks good
 svchost.exe back at work - taking up max memory and CPU usage, freezing my computer. And the taskbar menu is back to some odd gray. Please help…

Thanks again!
Hi there, just encountered another problem. When I click on the volume adjuster, this is the message I get - '"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. This program will now close." This is weird because when I switched on the computer there was no problem with the Volume thing. I've tried rebooting thrice and it works fine for the first few minutes. And then the taskbar changes its colour, the volume thing shows an error and computer goes real slow. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.
You can post in Other Computer Problems and see if they can help you with the sound issues.

Let them know we clean the PC in the HJT forum.

You can remove any programs I had you install

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Hi LDTate,
I think I got excited a bit too early.. The computer is still running extremely slow. I had McAfee VirusScan installed and ran it several times, it gave no signs of any virus. Then I ran the Kaspersky free online scanner which didnt locate any virus either. I then uninstalled McAfee and installed AVG Free Antivirus hoping that it would detect something, but in vain.

I've run AVG Anti-Spyware (in safe mode) but that didn't show any malware either.

Similarly I've run Spybot S & D and Ad-aware programs as well. Spybot S & D located something which I clicked on 'fix it'.

And I have a Zone Alarm firewall in place too.

I don't know what is making my computer sooooooo slow. Loading takes forever, and something called svchost.exe takes up maximum CPU and Memory usage. And after couple of minutes the sound devices stop working. And the taskbar menu changes from blue to an odd gray.

Please help.. please :(

Please help. Thanks in advance!
Nikki
lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.
Hi LDTate, Ran RegSeeker as you suggested, got couple of 'red' entries and deleted them. Booted my comp, nothing amiss so far. Programs running fine. But something called svchost.exe still taking up (frequently) 100% CPU and loads of memory. Really slow computer.. What next? Thanks for all your help so far. Really appreciate it. Just wish this svchost would stop slowing down my comp to a painful crawl…
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

Svchost.exe and its functions. Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.

See if anything here will help.

Hi LDTate, Thanks for all your help. Really really appreciate it. I did a quick search on google and one of the sites mentioned that svchost problem that I'm experiencing actually has something to do with one of the Microsoft updates… Rather weird, but in any case, since my computer had totally stopped responding, I went for a complete format/re-install. And now its working fine. Thanks once again for all your suggestions. Nikki.
