A bunch of things started happening with my computer today: 1) Bubbles started appearing saying that "firewalls are down, I am susceptible to attacks," and machine seemed to be paging endlessly; 2) Tried to run AdAware in response to this, and it froze upon reaching a certain file; 3) Restarted computer, old desktop dissappeared, now "Active Desktop Recovery" came up; 4) AdAware continues to freeze at the very same spot every time I run it; 5) Google search engine inaccessible; comes to a "google" looking page where I have to type in a code, then nothing happens. Because I can't run Adaware, I don't know how to deal with these problems. I'm doing a large SpyBot scan at the moment. I ran HijackThis, here is my report: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 2:51:29 PM, on 1/13/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\services.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\{082E9BB3-0384-1033-0621-010412200001}\Update.exe C:\Program Files\FinePixViewer\QuickDCF.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\mmx200.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\AdvTools\NPROTECT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\killer.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\wpcem.exe C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\free.exe C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\wpcem.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\S2xvZGphbmE\command.exe C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SpybotSD.exe c:\program files\avant browser\avant.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe C:\DOCUME~1\KLODJA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.747\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :0 R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\services.exe O2 - BHO: edit_html Class - {14D1A72D-8705-11D8-B120-0040F46CB696} - C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\113185615.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\services.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{082E9BB3-0384-1033-0621-010412200001}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{082E9BB3-0384-1033-0621-010412200001}\Update.exe" te-110-12-0000273 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft WWW] C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\free.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft WPCEmail] C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\svchost.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xp_system] C:\WINDOWS\inet20000\services.exe O4 - Global Startup: Exif Launcher.lnk = ? Hello and welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

If you receive any errors just get going with the fix.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1. Copy and paste this bold box text into a text editor such as Notepad.
Don't forget the REGEDIT4

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

2. Save this text as ResetAppInit.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop. Include the word REGEDIT4

3. Double-click on ResetAppInit.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

Next:
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find cmdService
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Do the same for this one:
COM+ Messages

Exit the Services utility.

Next:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
