Hi kkluxdal,

First, please post only once to have your log looked at. Starting more than one topic makes things confusing and just doubles the amount of work that needs to be done if not found (meaning someone else could pick up your other topic and now we would have 2 people working on your computer). Not to mention how confusing it could get if you get 2 different sets of instructions to deal with your issue (which can easily happen as many times there are several ways of dealing with a certain issue).

I am going to have the other topic here:
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…c=74703&hl=
merged or closed.
Once again, post back to this topic only.
I also see that this issue was dealt with (at lease partly) a few months ago but got dropped because you didn't reply back for an extended period of time. I suggest if you want it to stay fixed then stay with the topic and take all suggestions to finish it off.

Download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread. (c:\haxfix.txt)
Here is the Log. Sorry about the confusion about the 2 posts. Hi kkluxdal,

Option 2: Autofix
  • Double click on My Computer -> C:\ -> Program Files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press Enter
  • The computer will reboot
  • After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Post the contents of that logfile along with a new HijackThis log.
Here is the HaxFix log:

Hi kkluxdal,

Log looks clean. How are things running now?

There are a couple of issues that I think you should deal with ASAP.

1. It is crucial to update to Service Pack 2, it is probably the most important update the Microsoft has ever put out for WinXP and you are extremely vulnerable without it, Service Pack 2 significantly increases the security on your computer. I recommend that you do this update as soon as possible.

Link to Windows Update: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Please update your computer then post back with how it went. If you have any problems please post back with as much detail as you can. This is needed because any problems updating to SP2 could indicate that there is still some infection on your system that we need to address.

2. It doesn't appear that you have any Anti-Virus running on your computer. It does appear that Norton/Symantec was running at one time but not currently. Is this correct? If you don't have any AV there are a couple of wonderful free ones available for home/personal use. AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Online Scanners:
Trend Micro Housecall
Considering you have not had any AV installed you may want to consider running an online scan either from the link I gave you above or from here:
Kaspersky Online Scanner

The other thing I see which is not as critical is that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
If you do decide to remove it also have HJT fix this line:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Please report back on how the update went and how things are running now. At that point I can give you some other recommendations on preventing future re-infection.

Regards,
Dave
There still seems to be a major issue. I have a program, 3dviz.exe (Its an AutoDesk 3d rendering program, located in my C drive), that when i run it, it pops up in the windows task manager (crtl+alt+delete). it show up as a running process, but the window doesn't pop up, and nothing show up on the task bar at the bottom of windows. Also, when I started my computer this morning, I got an error message that said it "couldn't find vmmdiag32.exe"???

I'll post another HJT Log, and look for more advice from you. I thought I had service pack 2 installed. I'll look into getting that installed as well. I'll get the viewpoint item removed as well. I'll get the Kapersky installed as well.

Take a look at this log though, and let me know if you see anything that would be preventing the 3dsviz. I'll hold off on anything else until i hear back from you. I appreciate all your help, its very usefull. THANKS!!!

OK kkluxdal, I believe that 3dviz.exe should be running from a programs folder…specifically Autodesk. Not sure what's going on there. Question for you. Is this a "work" or "corporate" machine? Or is it your personal machine? I'll look a little more into why you would get that error looking for the vmmdiag32.exe file and get back to you. Dave
Dave, This is a work computer but, we dont have an IT staff anymore, so I'm really on my own to fix this. 3dsviz installs itself into a default folder C:\3DSVIZ3 and the 3dsviz.exe runs from there. Its the only program that is affected by this. I get all kinds of exe files that run randomly that have the (3) letters "win" and then a series of random letters followed by a ".exe" extension. For example: C:\DOCUME~1\Kasey\LOCALS~1\Temp\wintmrkl.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Kasey\LOCALS~1\Temp\winaddi.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Kasey\LOCALS~1\Temp\winkyvlqa.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Kasey\LOCALS~1\Temp\winhnqrkm.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Kasey\LOCALS~1\Temp\winghcod.exe I have no idea what they are. There may have been some of them listed in the HTJ files from earlier. I tried running the online virus scan, and it froze up my computer, so i wasn't able to get anything acomplished with that. I've removed the viewpoint items you suggested, as well. The computer has norton, but when i run a scan, nothing show up. I've ran spybot, ad-aware and they both come up with nothing as well. I wont do anything further until i hear back from you.
Hi kkluxdal,

Something is definitely not right with this PC. I saw those "win…" files in one of your earlier logs and I'm not sure what they are at this point.

Let me ask a question. Is that version of Norton actually up to date and "legal"? It looks funny to me.

Let's try running AVG Anti-Spyware and see what it finds:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program. The program can still be used after 30 days but loses some of the features such as real time scanning.
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!
Also, did you try running both the Kaspersky and Trend Micro online virus scans? Try one of those if you haven't. I posted links in an earlier post for both the Kaspersky and Trend Micro Online scanner. If you can't get either of those to work then try what I recommend next…

If Norton is outdated and you don't want to renew it then I would recommend one of the other 2 free permanent solutions I recommended earlier, AVG or AVAST, and completely uninstall Norton. I have used and still use both AVG and AVAST with good success.

Some of the issues you have may still be related to your Malware infection but my 6th sense tells me you have some other "computer related issues" here (hardware/software). I'll do my best to help you out there also. I would also recommend saving and backing up any precious work data (and what isn't?).

So please post the AVG AS log, any information from online scans if you can get them to run, and a new HJT log.

EDIT: Let's also run ATF cleaner to remove any temp files, ect..

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.
Regards,
Dave
We had an IT person just leave this week and the issue was unresolved before she left. There was short notice, and we're currently vulnerable when it comes to issues like this for the next two weeks. The Norton is legit, and is run off a server i think. As far as i know, its up to date and current on a daily basis. I used to have a trial version of "Ewido" installed which is now the Kapersky, but the 30-day trial is expired. I would get pop-up windows all the time from Ewido saying "winxxxx.exe is trying run" saying it was a part of some downloader virus. I'll try the online scans again to get you some more info. In the mean time, is there any other info I can get for you to help you figure out what is wrong????
At this point try doing the suggestions. 1. Downloading and running the new AVG AS - Give me a report 2. See if you can get one of the online scans to run 3. Run ATF cleaner to clean out your temp files, ect…that's where those win… files keep popping up. Post back with any scan results and a new HJT log and we'll go from there. I'll do my best but we're only volunteers here and I am sometime reluctant to get to involved with "corporate type work", although it doesn't sound like there is much of a "corporation" there :) But you may want to talk to "management" in the meantime about hiring a pro here. Regards, Dave
I've got the avg downloaded and running. I'll see if i can get an online scan to complete. I'll post all results as soon as they're available. I wont be at this computer until monday. Look for a response then. Thanks for all your help. I think we have some help coming in, but its not for the next 2 weeks. Thanks again. Kasey.
