My PC has been running slow for a couple weeks now. When I login after it has not been running a while it will run OK for about 7-8 minutes and then the fan will start to go nuts. When I check the Windows Task Manager it seems to be running at maximum capacity (100%) most of the time. I can't see any malicious programs running and I've tried Adaware, Spybot, running my Symantec Virus check, Windows Defender scan, etc. Here is my Hijack log (any help is much appreciated):

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following: Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.
Thanks for the input. Below is a new log file from this morning. JFYI, I started messing around with the mcconfig file to limit the amount of unneeded apps my computer was launching at startup because it was taking so long to load everything.

Hopefully, this logfile will help. My computer still has the same problem with really bogging down after I have it running for 5-10 minutes. It is a laptop and I'm also wondering if there is just an internal heat problem that occurs after it is running for several minutes. I have had some success in the past using compressed air to clean it the best I can without taking it apart but this time it hasn't seemed to help.

Thanks again for any help…

Be sure to keep SunJava, updated

In Add/Remove programs click on these and press *remove* if listed:

Download and run - ATF Cleaner instructions here.

—————————————————–

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware (ewido). Then scan and post the report here.
Instructions and download link can be found here.
I did all the things you recommended regarding updating/deleting Java files, running the ATF cleaner, and running/updating definitions file for the AVG Anti-spyware (which did not find any problems on my machine similar to Windows Defender, AdAware, and other stuff).

Here is my updated Hijack This logfile that I just ran – thanks again for all your help:

At this moment my computer is still very slow. It takes a couple minutes say to open IE or Foxfire or any other application and then takes another minute or so for a page such as Yahoo to load – sometimes even longer. The response time on clicks is also very slow. Typing is often delayed although at the moment is working OK. Fortunately, I have a computer at work so I've just been doing most of my essential things there.

I should also mention the scanning processes are tediously slow. The AVG for instance took at least 12 hours. I don't know for sure because I was as work when it finished but I started it in the evening and it was still going when I left for work the next day.

My fan is not annoyingly loud at the moment but sometimes it has been the past month.

Other than the general sluggishness there doesn't seem to be anything weird going on. This all started sometime toward the end of last year and before that it had been running just fine. I have also defragmented the hard drive and tried other little tricks that I knew to do.

Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Here is my new Hijack This logfile….thanks:

Here's a screen capture and a text log from the HD Tune Utility.

Notice the huge drop in Transfer Rate – that's the point where my computer runs fine for 5-10 minutes when I first start it up and then WHAM – the fan kicks on and everything bogs down to a slow grind.

I am not an expert on Temperature expectations. It started at around 30 C and currently has went up to 43 C after about 30 minutes of use.
