Hello. My daughter has totally messed up her computer – If you try open Internet Explorer, it hangs up and won't open. But it will open and works fine in safe mode. I've run AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG Anti-Spyware, along with Norton, but it still isn't working. Thanks so much in advance for your help! Here's her HijackThis log:

Thanks again for your help. I followed your directions, except that when I went to C:\Windows\System32 there was no file called svchosts.exe, only svchost.exe. We still can't access the internet in anything but safe mode. When we launch explorer, it comes up, and says it's loading her home page. But the home page never loads, and you can't type in a new address or anything. Here's the new HijackThis log:

Hey, I wanted to let you know that my daughter's computer is now working. I guess it just took forever for her home page to load the first time after we completed your instructions. You are a total genius! Thank you so much!
You were, of course, right. Last night, my daughter told me her computer was working – her definition of working and mine are completely different. When I turned it on to run HijackThis in normal mode, I discovered that it is still running quite slowly – not at all right. Here's the new log, and thanks again for your help!

Thanks again for all your help. I followed your instructions, rebooted and ran HijackThis is Normal mode. Then I tried to connect to the internet, but Explorer froze just like it had before. Now I'm in Safe Mode, but I have the HijackThis log that I ran in Normal Mode. Here it is:

Should I just give up and Format C:?
3.When was the last time you ran Disk Defragmenter?
Do this after cleaning Temp files and cookies.
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter

lets see if this will.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.
