Avast detected a trojan but it cannot remove it. Any suggestions? :unsure:

Could you post the message pertaining to the trojan that AVAST cannnot remove?

Meanwhile let's do the following:

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-spyware.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
    IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

Let's do the following:

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\ to delete the items in the Temp folder (but not the Temp folder itself)
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Note: If you cannot seem to navigate to the Temp folder above , use the Search feature and search on C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\*.*

There should be no files now in the
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\ folder.

Now please run your AVAST again and let me know if you obtain the same error message.

Hey I am pretty confused. There are 2 folders in my local. 1 is named Temp and the other is Temporary internet files. When I open the Temporary internet files folder it has all the cookies and apparently this is what I have been regularly deleting. If I click on the Temp folder there is another folder called Temporary Internet files which leads to a folder called Content.IE5 Sorry I hope this isn't too stupid, but what am I supposed to be erasing? Both?

I am sorry. Computers can be confusing!

Maybe you have already deleted files. What I wanted you to do was to be sure that the following were deleted.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\mma.chm\alien.cab\amm06.ocx
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\mma.chm\joysavsht.cab\amm06.ocx

If you deleted all the files within
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\
then I would have know that those two were deleted. Temp means temporary and it would not matter if other files along with those two were deleted within the Temp folder here.

I was then curious if AVAST would give you the same error.

Good work! :) Now empty your Recycle Bin, reboot, and then AVAST should not find anything.

Are you having any other problems?

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

Please reply with the Kapersky log and a fresh hijackthis log.

Good work! It looks like you are rid of those two files!

It appears that you have two anti-virus applications running.
Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe
and the Avast4

You need only one anti-virus application installed because they can interfere with each other. So you need to decide and uninstall one of them.

Note: the AVG anti-spyware complements an anti-virus so it does not fall into this category.

No Firewall Onboard

Also I do not see a firewall application installed. Perhaps you have a hardware firewall but a combination of both a software firewall and a hardware firewall is better. Just be sure there are no conflicts. Please do not rely solely on the Windows XP firewall. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.

You need to update your Java!
Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
