Computer Keeps Freezing, Sometimes Crashing

I don't know why but, seemingly all of a sudden, my wife's computer has started to freeze up in the middle of almost anything you are doing. These freezes are fairly frequent (several times a day). When this happens, we reboot and hope for the best. Once in a while, whatever action the computer doesn't like will trigger NOT a freeze, but a crash – where the computer just stops and reboots itself.

The reboots are even causing concern as the computer will sometimes freeze (and very rarely crash) WHILE rebooting. This particular problem happened yesterday, several times in succession. It must have taken 6-7 reboots before it would work.

The only major thing that changed for this computer before all of this started happening was the fact that Internet Explorer was updated to Version 7.

Okay, then…

Any ideas or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Here's the system configuration:

Hello and welcome Try this: To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."
Try this: To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP ***************** I have considered this option, but I am also curious to know if anyone knows whether IE7 has been causing problems such as that which I described. It seems to me that it's just as reasonable that IE7 is NOT the problem here. While IE is not my favorite browser in the world, I must add that I do have IE7 installed on another computer at home and am experiencing no problems with it at all. Before I leap backwards to IE6, I'd like to receive a little more feedback re: the HijackThis logfile I posted and recommendations for what to and NOT to remove. Assuming I do get some recommendations in that area, I think I'd like to try those first. ONE MORE THING I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED: I believe (but am not absolutely certain) that BEFORE the upgrade to IE7 the computer in question that is freezing up constantly was also not able to perform complete scans of AdAware and HouseCall. These programs would freeze at a certain point and then go no further. The computer itself was NOT freezing when these programs stopped running, just these scan programs themselves were freezing in their tracks. This behaviour made me suspicious that there may be a trojan horse or some other deeply embedded gremlin causing all this mischief. PROBLEM IS, what does one do when the very programs that are supposed to root out such problems can't perform their functions? Again, thanks in advance to all for your assistance.
There are a number of things that can cause the issues you're having.

For IE 7 users.
Microsoft released a patch for Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that will boost the brand-new browser's performance on some Web sites.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Microsoft released a patch for Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that will boost the brand-new browser's performance on some Web sites.
Patch:

************

Not sure that I need this patch (although it couldn't hurt to download it…could it??).
The browser isn't behaving slowly on some sites. Again, it's a generalized (or, semmingly generalized) problem of freeze ups and occassional crashes.

************

Do you have your windows CD?

I do.

And if you are going to suggest a full system reinstall, please remind me if I can or cannot do so without having to lose everything (all programs and all data) on the computer and then have to reload and update everything all over again. If the answer is the latter, the process will take hours (perhaps days) to get all of that done. If there is a way to JUST reinstall XP Pro from disk and then get SP2 from the Microsoft site (but NOT have to backup/move everything else), it'll still be time consuming, but much preferrable.

************

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

I ran the ATF cleaner, as recommended (although I should mention that I have CCleaner and use it regularly).

Based on the logfile above, I should also say that I am most interested in eliminating ALL items except THE most necessary to run. So, if you can recommend more to get rid of, I'm ready to do so.

************

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Sadly, we ran into crash/reboot situation after doing most of what you suggested. As I mentioned previously, the reboots are troubling as, often as not, the computer will freeze or reboot WHILE IT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF A REBOOT. It doesn't even seem to crazy about allowing me to reboot in safe mode.

And, once more, I'm curious about the situation where the AdAware and HouseCall PROGRAMS will freeze and not be able to finish their work. I notice from a Google search on this matter that others have experienced similar problems with these programs. Is there any way around this? Alternate programs that might find and eliminate the thing that's causing those other two programs to get hung up.

************

Thanks for your continued assistance.
It's possible there are corrupt system files and / or hardware problems.

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

Okay, here's what happened…in the middle of this process, the computer froze.

The general sense I have now is that there is something nasty going on that is (either by design or coincidence) making sure that ANY attempt to completely run a cleaning or diagnostic program will be stopped from completing its task.

I'm going to attempt this scannow one last time while in SAFE MODE and see if I don't have any luck. Although at this point, I'm not holding my breath.

Any thoughts?
P.S. The scannow in safe mode was a no go. I tried to launch it several times and just saw the shadow of the scannow window flash on the screen and then, within half a second disappear.

I'm beginning to think there's no way to defeat whatever is freezing this computer.

Unless, of course, there is a known virus or trojan that is doing this sort of thing to lots of other computers…in which case, perhaps, I can download a fix to that problem and take a chance that, once agin, I might get lucky.
Sounds like you could be having a hardware issue. Have you checked the cooling fans and power supply fan to make sure they are working and free of dirt / dust balls? It could be a overheating issue.

Lets try this
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter
Here's what I can tell you:

I defragged the drive and the friggin' thing is still freezin' and a crashin'.

I checked the innards of the machine and dusted and vacuumed, accordingly.

The fan appears to be working fine.

If there is a power supply problem, I don't know how I can test that. I'd need a professional shop to do that, yes?

I'm still of the conviction that there is some kinda virus or trojan that is bollixing up the works and preventing me from completing ANY thorough system scan for such infections or any other problems.

Of course, I'd love it if someone would post a reply and say that there is a/are known virus(es) and/or trojan(s) that cause this sort of thing to happen. Then, perhaps, I could try to download those files that would try to clean those specific problems out of the computer.

Otherwise, I suspect I am looking at a full system reinstall. If you (or anyone else) cannot help with any of what I have written above, is this the conclusion you would draw? If so, where can I find the best set of instructions regarding how to do this properly? I will need to back up everything before I proceed, yes?

OR…is there a way to reinstall the operating system WITHOUT the need to back up all other files?

OR, OR, OR…are there some critical system files that are those most commonly corrupted, which I can try to copy from the original disk to see if they don't attack the problem?

What do you (or others lurking) think?

Almost ready to throw up my hands in disgust (or, maybe just throw up),
but, once again, thankful for all the thoughtful time and attention…

We've been using AVG for a long time.

However, I tried running it in safe mode and, sure enough, halfway through the process, the computer froze.

Once again, I cannot run any disinfection scans all the way through.
* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Okay, I downloaded the program and… (I'll bet you'll never guess ;-) … that's right… the computer crashed. I tried rebooting in safe mode, but the computer won't run the program in that mode. So, I tried again…this time in debugging mode. I actually got a log (see below) but, when I first tried to access it…yep, the computer froze.
