Thanks so much for responding to my message. I've been trying to do some of the most basic functions with my computer and it does not seem to want to cooperate.

Overall, my computer is really really slow, such as when booting, shutting down and switching between applications. Also, it takes several minutes to open my Word and Excel files whether directly clicking on the files or opening email attachments.

I have also recently upgraded my Internet explorer to the latest version (7 point something). I think that it might not be compatible with the Yahoo tool bar. I also have a google search tool bar. How do I make them all compatible? Sometimes, when I open Internet explorer right after booting up, the window closes immediately. Then I reload the window and am able to use it again. I'm not sure why this is happening.

Thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Please describe what problems you're having with the computer.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP

Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

See if info here will help
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem…owcomputer.html
Thanks for the tips! I followed the guidelines on cleaning up old files and disabling some of the programs that start up when I boot my computer.

I have a couple more questions. It takes forever to open Word and Excel documents and I'm not sure why or how to fix this issue. Also, when I start up my computer, I get the following message:

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start
the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually".

I'm not sure what this means or how to fix.

Finally, I re-ran my log after cleaning up some of my programs and files to make my computer work faster. Is there anything that I should delete?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hello!

I removed windows defender as suggested and re-ran the log (below).

Since I have disabled certain programs when booting up my computer, the boot time is slightly faster. However, it still takes awhile for all programs to fully launch before I can open any windows (not much improvement). It also takes a long time between applications and switching windows, as well as opening up Word and Excel documents. It sounds like the computer is really labouring.

Thanks so much for your help.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.
Hi!

I downloaded and ran those two programs that were suggested to clean up my registry.

When I ran the RegSeeker, over 700 items popped up. I deleted about 200 items that were in red. I was not sure whether I should delete the items in green (i.e. some said invalid path) or items in maroon (i.e. some said invalid. I was not sure whether this was the same as red items that should be deleted. These items appeared towards the end of the list).

My computer is still not that much faster and Word and Excel documents still take forever to open. What should I do with these items in green and maroon?

Thanks so much.

I re-ran the log:

Hi!

I did not uninstall the HP printer software yet. My printer is an HP LasaerJet 1012. I did not find this model in http://www.hp.com/pond/pnp to download the appropriate driver. Any suggestions on which one I can use instead?

However, I read the thread of discussions surrouding this HP printer issue. I followed one of the discussions that said to uncheck the following items during setup:

1. StatusClient "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox\Apache Tomcat 4.0\webapps\Toolbox\Ststusclient.exe /auto"

2. hpbpsttp "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox\hpbpsttp.exe

After unchecking these, I can now open my Word and Excel documents normally instead of waiting 5-10 minutes each time. This was exciting. I hope I did the right thing. Should I have done this or should I still uninstall my current software?

Also, I ran my log on this quick analysis site. It says to fix the following entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://start.sympatico.ca/

Any suggestions?

I re-ran my log.

Hi!

I unstalled my HP driver. Now, I am trying to download one from the website suggested, but I don't know which one to download. The options are:

1) hp LaserJet 1010 series printing system - 54.8MB
2) hp LaserJet 1010 series host based driver - 0.89MB

Also, where is the best place to save this download?

To remove:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://start.sympatico.ca/

Would you mind going over the steps? I'm afraid to remove this incorrectly.

The computer is running much better in terms of opening up my documents. At times, it still sounds like it's labouring. Maybe I did not remove everything that I could from the registry?

Thanks so much for your help.
Hi! I can't seem to install my printer driver. I downloaded and saved the file onto my desktop. Then I unzipped the file onto my C drive - 40 files were extracted. Then I went into the printer folder under control panel to add a printer. Now, this is where I'm having the problem. It asks where I want to connect the printer and I select LPT1. Then I am told that it cannot detect any printers, so I need to install manually. However, the list provided contains LaserJet 1100 series (and some others)…which I think the 1100 is the closest to my printer. My printer is a LaserJet 1012. I tried installing the 1100 series one, but it does not seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? While I am doing this, a window detecting the printer pops up and asks whether I want to install the driver from a CD. Thanks for your help.
