I'm new to this but I'll have a go.
If I hibernate or standby my laptop it freezes at the restart screen after it reloads.
Here's my hijackthis log.

If anyone can help I would be very greatful. Thanks.
Thought I'd leave a little more info about the problems on my laptop. Hibernation and standby stoped functioning after virus scans, we also had virus adware install onto the computer by itself, this would'nt let me remove it from add remove programs as it would tell me that it needed to restart before it could be removed, it used this to bypass the removal and still showed up after restart. We had avg antivirus free version and were told that it wouldnt protect the computer fully. So I was talked into getting Norton antvirus which still didnt remove the problems. I tracked down the files manually and removed all but two, these ones were protected or locked files so I removed them in safe mode. After that I thought everything was good but now I'm unsure. I used the free Xsoftspy scan and it shows up many problems. Is Norton intivirus any good? its very slow. Is it possible that there are just ghosts left over from these nasty programs? Thank's in advance. Judd. Ps, You guys are fantastic helping we 'the computer illiterate' Good on ya's.
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

We had avg antivirus free version and were told that it wouldnt protect the computer fully

Who told you that? I use that myself

I suggest you do this:

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe in case you lose your internet connect during the fix. You just run it and things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
newdotnet
new.net
GoZilla

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button below to reply.
Thnks for your help.

All done, the files were not in the add remove section.
System seems a bit faster but startup is still slow when norton loads(is that normal?) then the hard drive is busy for a while, 1 to 2 mins. IE seems faster too.

I knew Avg was good! I got sucked in by a sales bloke telling me that free versions had holes all through them because anyone can acsess them.

Here's the log.

The infection you have can cause you to lose your internet connection.
Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe in case that happens. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

After the above:

Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Start the program and then check the I know what I'm doing box.

Move all instances of newdotnet7_22.dll (and nothing else), to the Remove pane.
Click the Finish Button and reboot.

Find and delete the file c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet7_22.dll

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
I've already downloaded winsockxpfix. LSPfix done. Didn't find the file c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet7_22.dll
Cleaned drive c.

Standby and Hibernation still don't work, I have to remove the power and battery to shut off, should I stick to turn off for now?
What level of security risk is this type of problem?

That shouldn't be any security risk.
Try creating a new user and see if it works for another user.
Tried new users with no luck. Can I do any damage shuting down by pulling the power? Does it look like I have any security risks? Thanks LDTate. Judd.
It works if I use start then shutdown and if I configure the off switch to shutdown instead of hibernate or standby. Just wont restart out of hib or standby.
No luck at KC. Here's the main problems, After hibernation it loads up and then freezes on the black window with the loading progress bar when it reaches the end. Nothing works including holding down the power button. When I standby and then press the power button to restart, the hard drive fires up and the fan winds up, the screen stays off and then the hard drive and the fan stop leaving me with the screen off and just the power button lit up. It responds to nothing, as I restrain myself from bashing the keybord. One other problem that I forgot to mention is an error message that comes on during shutdown, but only every after 8 or so shutdowns. It mentions a failure to do with memory. As it does'nt do this every time I'll post you the exact error message next time it comes up. Hope that info helps. My computer is a compaq Laptop Presario v2418au. I've checked a lot of help topics in microsoft and Hp but hav'nt found anything that sounds the same. Once again thank's for your time and help. P s Have you found any nasties in the last HJT logs?
Lets get another Anti-Virus program first. I don't want you on the net unprotected.

Click the HERE and Save, Install, Update

After the above:

In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-s…src=bar_sch_nam

Now lets see if that makes any difference.
