My son's laptop has become infected with something/s that cause it to go to a blue screen when he tries to start it up, after he gets to the part of startup that requires him to enter his password (running XP). He has run Spybot and Adaware. He is able to start the computer in Safe Mode. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx.
Further to yesterdays post, he has now told me that, when the blue screen comes up, a message shows at the bottom of the screen saying "dumping physical memory to disc", then a countdown starts, then the computer restarts and the same thing happens over again!
Have now made him show me what's happening. After he logs on, he gets a blue screen with the following message: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS update. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your coputer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options and then select safe mode. Technical Information: Stop: 0x0000008E, (0xc0000005, 0xEE85A3D7, 0xF7021A20, 0X00000000) system32: 12x32.sys - Address EE85A3D7 base at EE858000, Datestamp 458c2c44 beginning dump of physical memory dumping physical memory to disk: __ secs and this keeps cycling through until he turns of the power. He says that he hadn't installed any new programs in the lead-up to this happening. Download ATF Cleaner instructions here.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware Instructions and download link can be found here.
Update it but DO NOT run a scan just yet, we will run the scan later.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

[external image: Posted Image]

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

[external image: Posted Image]

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works.
It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt
Please post the C:\rapport.txt in your next reply

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
Am downloading those now. Question - he says he can't connect to the internet in Safe Mode, so how will I update AVG? And do you want us to run ATF and AVG now, or just SmitfraudFix. Appreciate the help Little Eagle.
Here is the rapport log. I think we have a wireless LAN, but I have never tried to "talk" to the kids computers, so I wouldn't know how to "piggyback" him onto the Net that way. Can I install AVG on this machine, update it and get the files to the laptop via a USB stick? Then post:
1.c:rapport.txt
2.AVG Anti-Spyware log
3.A new HijackThis log

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
The internet connection won't open when the computer is in safe mode, and the computer won't open in anything else!! To get this far I downloaded the three programs to a USB stick and transferred them to the laptop - can I do that with the updates for AVG? I can load that onto this desktop and get the updates downloaded into it - can I then get the updates from the desktop copy of AVG and transfer them via USB to AVG on the laptop?
