Just Not Sure--Slow Startup Due to ?

I tried to follow your self-help process–ran HJT first, then downloaded AVG and did full scan. The AVG report is
way to big to post–apparently a lot of files in Norton Protected trash. There were many "mild" threats in the AVG scan and only 1 major threat–qdown. Here is the HJT log PRE-AVG scan.

I greatlyappreciate any guidance. Thanks…Key issue has been slow start up and high CPU usage.

I believe so…I followed the "self-help" instructions in setting up AVG before scanning in safe-mode.
With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All (if all of the items in quarrantine need removing) then Remove Finally Also empty Norton Protected trash. Your log looks OK to me. How's it running?
A bit more info: Yes, "How to Act" in AVG is set to quarantine. But there are no quarantined files…The Qdown item was cleaned—it was the first item in the AVG report… AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 6:53:25 PM 1/1/2007 + Scan result: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{49178E06-7DA8-4BA8-85A5-366F1B8201C2}\RP135\A0028934.dll -> Adware.Minibug : Cleaned. I guess we're crossing posts…Thanks for the quick response. The PC is running OK, but startup is just slower than it's ever been. If the HJT log looks good, then I'm going to have to look at upgrading memory or deselecting startup programs (or both).
lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Thank You LD. I will follow your recommendations, but I may need to wait until later in the week to do it. It's getting late for me now and I'm going to be tied up for a few days. You have been most helpful and I will post a follow up once I have completed the registry cleaning. Again, thanks and Happy New Year.
Hello LD, Sorry…I ended up traveling most of last week and then again from Monday to yesterday this week. But I did follow your guidance with ERUNT and RegSeeker before I left. I must have run RegSeeker 10 times and it still picked up stuff from the registry. I think it found thousands the first run and then fewer in subsequent runs. Eventually it got to a point where it was finding 17 to 20 each time. I figured it had run the course. The machine still starts up slow, but appears to be running smoother. At least that's what my kids are telling me and it matches my experience the few times I've used it in the past two weeks. I guess I need to go at the startup list (from cmd: msconfig), but I'm not sure that I've ever been successful in permanently removing any startup items. Should I re-run HJT and post?
One question–The AVG program appears to be pretty good. I have Norton AV (as part of Norton Internet Security) and also had Sunbelt Counterspy. Norton says it is not compatible with Sunbelt and I've disabled it. Would I be better protected with AVG and Norton?
