Hi, I'm Noi and I'm in Thailand.

I have a Pent. 4 PC with 1.60MHz CPU, Win XP SP2 and 384MB of RAM. It has a 40MB Maxtor HD, which is about 50 percent full in two partitions. It also has a 80MB Seagate SATA HD, which is currently disconnected, as I have to keep disconnecting the cable to it, because the PC won't bootup or keeps giving a startup error i.e., DISK BOOT FAILURE, PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I believe these problems have to do with my Motherboard, which is an ECS PT800CE-A V1.2.

I've used a Maxtor utility to check the HD, and apparently it's fine, being only about a year old too.

I've ran numerous spyware scans on the PC, but they've failed to pick up any spyware and fix my major problems, which are as follows: YM Chat screen lagging, slow PC startup (about 220 seconds according to BootLog XP), WMP lagging or freezing while I'm watching my family's beach holidays, slow eMule downloads, internet radio lagging, slow system chkdsk with each scan taking about 2 hours to check each drive and usually not finding any disk errors. The scans slow right down on stages 4-5 and general problems with programs and IE screens not responding until I have to reboot.

Please help me to watch my WMP movies and listen to Bird-Tongchai McIntyre.
:)

Cheers. Noi

Hi, it's Noi again, my problems are still the same.

It's been five days now and I'm updating my HJ log and putting this in the thread that gives extra attention, to posts without any Tech Support replies. It probably didn't help that I initially posted this on New Years Eve. :P

Cheers again, Noi.

Hello Noi :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

You have a few bad things going on that we need to fix. You have Ewido installed, what I would like you to do is go to the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall it, its an old version. Ewido has been bought by AVG, I would like you to download and install the trial of AVG.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Download the Stand Alone Version of CWShredder to your desktop.
  • Open CWShredder
  • Check for Updates
  • Close out the program. <– Dont run it yet

    Ok, lets start the fix.
    • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
    • Scroll down to MsInfo Service
    • Double Click that service to open it.
    • Click on Stop Service.
    • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
      Also do this for
    • Scroll down to TempServices
    • OK your way out of the program.

    • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
    • Type in MsInfo
    • Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

    Do this also for TempServices

You need to boot to Safemode to run both the above programs.
    To Enter Safemode
    • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
    • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
    • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
    • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

    Open CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click Fix and click OK at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click Next and then Exit .

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Reboot normally

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Let me know what CWShredder found and removed, I also need to see the AVG Log and a New HJT log.
Hi Ken, I've been taking holidays down south, thanks for the reply and sorry about my delay in running the three scans, etc.

Okay, firstly the CWS scan reported that, I was not infected and I've pasted AVG's and HJT scan logs:

Having more than one Anti Virus program running is a no no, it will contribute to poor system performance. It looks like you have 2 running. Look through them and just keep one and uninstall the others via the Add-Remove program in the Control Panel.

C:\Program Files\Bkav2006\Bkav2006.exe
C:\Program Files\BLuPro\BLuPro.exe
C:\Program Files\Eset\nod32kui.exe

How are things running now? Any better.
Hi Ken I've followed your instructions and the PC seems to be running a fraction quicker. The CHKDSK scans have marginally quickened. There are new problems now. The drive c keeps filling up, because a file in drive c named Logfile.etl keeps reappearing after I've used Unlocker and deleted it. Any idea which program may be allocating this file? I've googled the problem and followed advice, but alas the file keeps appearing in drive c and it's HUGE, like it takes up the last 10 gigs in the 20gb drive c. Also I've downloaded and used the program Trojanhunter, but after about a minute of scanning it freezes and says: not responding. Please help, as I can't find time to do anything else and check the PC's performance, other than troubleshoot all these problems. Cheers Noi

Your HJT log appears fine and the scans picked up nothing bad so this is most likely a windows issue and this forum is for the removal of malware so I am going to recommend some windows support sites including our own here at Tom Coyote. I am going to PM one of the modes with a link to this thread, they are better equipped to help you. So post your problem at Other Computer Problems here at TC.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
A couple of points before you post in the other forum. This was pointed out by DOUGH in Other Computer Problems.

You have this service running, the log file may be associated with this program and does use huge amounts of disk space.
O23 - Service: Acronis Scheduler2 Service (AcrSch2Svc) - Acronis - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedul2.exe

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig and make sure that Normal Startup is selected.

Ken, I selected normal startup and unchecked the programs' boxes which I didn't want running at startup, but after re-boot I see that msconfig startup is running as selective startup again.
