I came home yesterday to find that my husband got a virus on the computer. We have Webroot Spy Sweeper, I ran a scan and it found a Trojan virus that I deleted. I also scanned with my anti-virus software, Avast, found some adware but no Trojan. But I am still getting the little window that pops up saying there is a system alert and when I click on the icon in my tray it takes me to a site for Antivermins Software and wants me to purchase it. There is also a link for it to scan your computer for free, I believe my husband did do this scan, but nothing more was done.

I do not have much computer tech knowledge so I cannot decide what I would need to delete. Thank you for your help.

I have attached my Hijack This log:

Hi. Welcome to TomCoyote.

SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Please download SmitFraudFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Smitfraud.exe - this will create a SmitfraudFix folder.
  • Open the folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter - a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Do not run any of the other options at this stage.

Please copy/paste the content of the report (c:\rapport.txt) into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

… my husband and I have a different sign on, will I need to repeat this task signed on as him?

No. This will remove the infection from the computer. It is not user-specific. Thanks for letting me know - I'll bear it in mind as we go through the fix.

First, I need you to download a couple of programs.

—————————————————————–

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.

Do not use it yet.

—————————————————————-

AVG Anti-Spyware:

If you already have this program installed, please update it as detailed below.

Please note that you must uninstall all versions of Ewido anti-spyware before installing this program.

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

—————————————————————

You need to reboot your computer in Safe Mode for the next step. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
————————————————————-

Open the SmitFraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press 'Enter' to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : 'Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?'; answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter' in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter'.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode (as above).

I am sorry, I haven't had a chance to update you. I was in the process of following your steps, when I ran into a problem and instead of coming here an asking you, I tried to fix it myself. I could not get the computer to boot up in safe mode, it kept saying there was a problem. I remembered starting it in safe mode by going into msconfig, so I wanted to try that and then let you know what happend. Needless to say, the computer was stuck in a vicious loop of nothing but booting up and getting into safe mode or the regular one. My husband decided to this was an oportune time to buy a new computer which we did. I have just now got everything up and running on the new one. As for the old computer, he decided to just buy a new hard drive and scrap the old one. Thank you for your help. I'm sure we would have fixed the problem had I followed directions and asked a question when I needed.
Hi urbansunrise. Thanks for letting me know what's happened. As you now know, it's not a good idea to start in safe mode using msconfig! It's a shame that we didn't get your computer clean but it must be nice to have a new one! :) Best of luck for the future.
