User contacted me to state that they couldn't change their home page in IE.

Installed and ran Spybot. Minor problems found. Fixed problems. User attempted to change home page by navigating the the desired home page web site, going to Tools, Internet Options and click the Use Current button. But then clicking the home page button on the browser brings the user back to the very same page as before.

Installed and ran Ad-Aware. "Critical" problems found. Fixed problems. Again user tries to change home web page using the same method as before. This time, when the user changed their home page, it appeared to stick. The use logged off and logged back in and the home page was still changed to the new one. Everything seemed ok.

Then the user rebooted the PC, logged back in and discovered that the home page reverted back to the original unwanted home page.

Ran Hijack This! in order to post the log file to see if anyone might know what's going on. I'm not that familiar with interpreting the entries.

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give.

Here is the log:

Welcome to Tom Coyote Your HJT log is hard to read as you did not post it correctly, do this.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well
  • Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button and not the New Topic Button
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

What Homepage is being reset???
Here's a revised HJT log:

Robert,

What Homepage is being reset??? and to what???

Do you know about this?
winvnc4.exe is a remote desktop control toll which allows you control someone's computer from remote or vice versa. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Is this something you use or know about?

Let me see the AVG report and a new HJT log

Robert,

What Homepage is being reset??? and to what???

Both of the websites, the original which seems not to be able to be changed, and the new website, which is the one the user is trying to make their new home page, are internal AT&T sites. There both legitimate sites. What the user is experiencing is that they are unable to change their homepage to the new site. Whenever the pc is rebooted, the old original web site reappears as the default home page.

Do you know about this?
winvnc4.exe is a remote desktop control toll which allows you control someone's computer from remote or vice versa. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

This is a legitimate program used by support personnel within AT&T.

Hope this gives some useful information.
I can't believe this. I forgot to give the results of following the given instructions! Nothing changed. The problem remains. When the user changes their home page, the change only lasts during that login session. After a total reboot, the change to the home page is lost and it goes back to the original, unwanted home page.
Robert Parsons,

You can fix this entry with HJT.
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=about:blank

Your log looks fine and all AVG found where cookies.

There are infections being written to evade Hijackthis, so go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon [external image: Posted Image] and rename it to Scanner.exe, run the program to Scan and Save a Log File and post a new log into this thread.

Copy and paste the link to the page that you are being redirected to.
I followed the instructions that were given in the last response to my post. The problem still remains. There is a further interesting side note to this. Not only can the user NOT change their IE home page but they also can't change their default printer. Related?

Here are the urls relevant to this problem:

Current home page: http://infocenter.att.com/
Desired home page: http://myintranet.att.com/portal/index.jsp

The problem is that the user can't change the default home page from the current home page to the desired home page. After the user makes the change to the desired home page, the home page reverts back to the current home page.

Lets remove these with HJT, I am providing the instructions to Restore any or all of them, what I would do is uninstall one at a time, reboot and make sure you still have internet. If all is ok, do the next one.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://us-auto.proxy.att.com:8001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on "View the list of Backups"
  • Place a check mark next to anything you want to restore
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer

I am getting many mixed results from this program, as the Java file is not supposed to be there. I would suggest uninstalling it, you can always reinstall it later if needed.

Let me see a new log please.
Robert Parsons,

This may be easier and getting this resolved a lot quicker if you had the user join Tom Coyote and post his HJT log. He can start a new topic and we can close this one out after he posts. Reply to this thread with his user name for that he joins Tom Coyote with and I will look for it and pick it up.

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=27

Here are his set up instructions for HJT

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
Update: Followed all of the suggestions in the last response, but the problem still remains. The user has decided not to pursue this any further. The user didn't want to join the message forum and work the problem from that perspective. Thanks for all of your assistance and work on this problem. Take care.
Sorry we couldn't be more help, but like I stated in my last reply its kind of hard working through someone else and not the user. This thread is being closed by the posters request.
