A report didn't come up when I followed the instructions, I couldn't open the hijack file in notepad I had to open it in word?

The computer is really slow as well, I hope you can help me from this

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msvij.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spdav.dll




No need to download again but please run it. Sometimes it takes 4-5 times running Fixwareout and the flushdns to remove the bad 017's

Double Click Fixwareout.exe and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns
If you are typing this in, note the space between the g /f
It needs to be there.


Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Note: Do this for all Network Connections
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks



Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, happy new year! I know you may not reply to this today, but I haven't been able to get on the computer as it is going soooo slow!! and it won't let me on the internet always!! anyway, I followed your instructions and it didn't bring up a report but I have got the hijack this file! it really is slow and takes ages to load pages. I downloaded updates from microsoft and I think it downloaded something called service pack 2.

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
    Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
    Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe



I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.

Hi, I have done this, although it didn't let me download the regseeker .. When I load up I keep getting the 'low on virtual memory' message! - Coul this be simple like I have too many photos on or something like that?

It looks like you had Symantec / Norton's and removed it.

try this:

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.



If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

Hi, Here it is, my computer still keeps coming up with the message low on virtual memory. also the internet takes ages to load and sometimes doesn't even load and I have to reboot!

Hi, It is still really slow, and still says low on virtual memory etc… I am sorry to be a pain but it is really annoying. Do you think I should take everything off and format it? how long does this process take and is it easy?

It really depends on how much RAM and Hard drive space you have.

3.When was the last time you ran Disk Defragmenter?
Do this after cleaning Temp files and cookies.
Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter
