I'm having various problems that I suspect are all related. Certain websites are coming up as others. Some websites don't work at all, such as Amazon. When I'm at Google, I need to click on a link 3 times before it gives me the desired page. The 1st 2 times, it will send me to some other pages, including ebay, that contain my searched word or phrase. Worst of all, my Outlook no longer works. Won't even come up, just gives me an error message. I tried to reinstall, but that doesn't help. The same problem persists. Anyway, here is my HijackThis Log. If anyone can help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello geko,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hello geko,

I do see sign of infection in your log, But first You have two HiJackThis.exe installed we will need to make sure you are using this one here
C:\Program Files\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<<< good
NOT this one C:\DOCUME~1\GENEKO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe <<< BAD

If you have a short cut created on your desktop please right on it (HijackThis.exe icon) and delete it.

Now we are going to create a shortcut to the one in program file to have it on your desktop for easy access. This is very important.
Now click on Start > click on MyComputer> then c: drive then > Program Files > then open hijackthis folder.
Now right click on HijackThis.exe icon and choose Send to > then choose Desktop(create shortcut)
Done close all open windows.

Ok now this is the one we have to use so backups don't get deleted. Forget about the one in the temp folder we will remove it later while we are cleaning infection.

———————————————————————

Please disable Spybot S&D TeaTimer, as it may hinder (block) the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean. To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
  • Check Yes to next window.
  • Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
  • Click on System Startup icon.
  • Uncheck Teatimer box.
  • Click Allow Change box.

If you still need help with how to disable Teatimer please see here.
———————————————————————–

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads, post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

I've done everything you asked and attached is the HJT log:

Again, thank you so much for all your help. Especially over the holidays. It really goes above and beyond the call of duty. And it's not even your duty. So thanks again and I wish you a very happy holiday, whatever you celebrate.

Hello geko,

Great job.

We just need to do some tidy up.

Find FixWareout that you downloaded and right click on it and choose delete. It is of no use now.

You can go back and rehide system files:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu at top of this screen and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Remove checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button(round circle) labeled Do not Show hidden files and folders.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
————————————————————-

Now you can re-enble Spybot S&D TeaTimer
In Spybot, click mode up top, then Advanced Mode. Click Tools, then Resident, and restore the checkmark beside Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.

If TeaTimer warns of any changes having been made, accept the changes; do not allow TeaTimer to restore the system to a previous state or do anything to undo the fixes that have been done.

———————————————————–

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Wareout please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

May your God go with you..
Tim
Thank you very much. You have been an incredible help. The internet problems I was having previously, seems to have been fixed and the computer is running smoothly. I will take the steps you have recommended to secure my computer further. The only problem that still remains is my Outlook, which continues to give me the dialogue box that begins with: Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. And than proceeds to shut down. I thought it could be related to the other problems I was having, as it appeared around the same time, but perhaps it wasn't. When my computer was infected, I tried reinstalling, but it did the same thing. Should I try reinstalling now. Or do you think there may be another problem with it. Anyway, thank you again for all your help. If there is something I can do to repay you, please let me know. Happy holidays. -gene
