Hi SRG and welcome to the TC forums.

First, I'm not seeing any evidence in your HJT log of any Malware. The shutdown problem may be a hardware issue. But let's make sure you don't have any Malware and stay protected in the future.

What concerns me most is that I see no evidence of any kind of Malware Protection. ie Antiviurs, Firewall, AntiSpyware, ect…

So I would recommend you immediately install Antivirus protection and run a scan. There are a couple of great free versions that work well. I use Avast myself. At a minimum if you don't want to install AV software you can run the Trendmicro online scan from the link I have provided below. I also recommend downloaded and running AVG Anti-Spyware and updating your Java ASAP, see below for instructions.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here is a list of some free and evaluation versions to try: AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Online Scanners:
Trend Micro Housecall
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program - You can still use the program after 30 days but it disables real-time protection. Though it is still great for a regular scan, say weekly.Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Start Update Button. The progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
In the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine.
Under Reports:
*Select Automatically generate report after every scan
*Un-Select Only if threats were found
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and tap the F8 key just before the loading Windows screen appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab
then click on Complete System Scan.
AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
*If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all
actions

*Next select the Reports icon at the top.
*Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.
Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Enviroinment (JRE) 6, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop (12.6 MB).
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
So at this point post back your results from your Anti-Virus scan, if any, the AVG scan, and a new HJT log.

Regards,
Dave
Thanks soooo much for all the advice, Dave. I will work on all of this and get back with you. It may be after the first of the year with all the holiday activities going on, etc! So, don't delete this topic anytime soon, please :D Sonya

Hi Sonya,

Do you still need our help here? If so please let us know.

Thank you,
Dave

I have not yet employed your recommendations which I plan to do Sunday/Monday :) So please don't delete this topic just yet! Thanks…

Sonya
No problem Sonya, I'll keep this thread alive. I was just going through all my old posts to check up on everyone…you would be amazed out how many people never get back to us…oh well. Thanks for getting back to me and I'll keep an eye out for your reply here. Regards, Dave Edit: PS…I would also recommend that you limit, or even better, not use this computer for the internet if possible unless you have put at least some AV protection in place. Running without AV protection is an extremely bad idea. Just my thoughts….In my first response I gave you links to a couple of great free AV programs…both of which I have used at one time or another with excellent results.
OK, Dave, I have done everything you recommended :) Below is the new HijackThis log and the AVG Anti-Spyware report (which found worm.warezov.ev):

Thanks so much for your patience!

Sonya

::Report end
Hi Sonya,

That appears to be a mass-mailing worm that AVG found and cleaned. That is good. Also good is that you now have and AV in place
Have you had a chance to update and run Avast AV? If so did it find anything? Also, how are things running now? Any better?
Also good work on getting Java updated

Let me know how things are going. Considering you have appeared to be running without Anti-Virus for sometime I would also recommend running an online scan when you get a chance to see if anything else is hiding.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Also let us know if your Avast AV has found anything.

Regards,
Dave
I did update and run Avast, and I think it found a few tracking cookies. Since I just did all this today, I won't know for a few days how it's running. The secretary is in the office weekday mornings, but I will keep in touch with her! Next time I can, I'll use the online scanner and update everything and run these other programs again and get back with you. I'm also going to talk to my pastor about upgrading to DSL. Right now, there is dial-up, and I know that the computer is not online long enough at one time for automatic updates to download. That concerns me so I am going to see if they will consider going with DSL to help that. Again, thanks SO much for all your advice so far, and I'm very impressed by your quick response as well! I know that you must be very busy and this is just volunteer help so please know that I appreciate it very, very much! Sonya
