Thanks for the help
Hello gbloom,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hello gbloom,

Ok let get started.

You are running HJT from directly from your desktop.
Create a folder called HJT either in C: or My documents and place the HiJackThis.exe in there.
This will ensure we have back ups made and it doesn't get deleted .
This is very important to have done first!

—————————————————

You log shows you are running two Firewalls at the same time which can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable. They can conflict with each other which leaves you open to infection. Never run more than one Antivirus program or firewall program on the same machine.

Norton AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm

If your Norton AntiVirus installed, is not currently capable of receiving updates of virus definitions and no longer has an active subscription to antivirus updates, it cannot protect your system from malware. Please let me know and I can direct you to a couple that are free for home personel use only.

You must uninstall all others.

————————————————–

Please do the followng:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

———————————————

This is next:

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1.Start HijackThis

[external image: Posted Image]

2. Click on the Open the Misc tool section button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button

[external image: Posted Image]

4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save list button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Note: please uncheck word wrap under format in notepad

Post HJT Uninstall list in next reply
————————————————

Please post these in your next reply to this thread.

New HJT log
Tim S,
Thanks for the thorough reply!

Here's what I've done:
- HJT moved to a folder
- I've removed Norton Antivirus Suite (trial version that came with the computer) from the computer. I installed Symantic Corporate anti-virus, from a license I have at work. Security programs now consist of:

Symantic Corporate Anti-virus
Zone Alarm Firewall
Ad-Aware Anti-spyware

This combination seems to work on other computers I use. Let me know if you think there's a problem with this.

I've also downloaded all the Windows XP security updates, including Explorer 7

Here's the ouput of rapport.txt

Thanks again for the help!!
Hello gbloom,

Thanks for posting logs.
That is better but this is the same virus program we use at work too and it has a firewall included in the package. The two firewalls will conflict with each other which will cause neither one to protect your system from infections and cause computer slows downs and other problems.
Is the license for virus program (version you have) OK'ed by Symantic Corporate to be used on more than one computer at a time?
This is important because I only have one computer at work so is it is paid for on just that one system. If it is installed on another computer when they validate copy it will not receive updates to protection system from infection they do this at ramdon updates. You will receive a message from the program updater that you need to purchase a separate license for this system.

Symantic Corporate Anti-virus
Zone Alarm Firewall

I know of a couple of virus programs that work well with Zone Alarm Firewall and they are Free for private(home use only, non-commercial) and are not such resource hogs.

link to one AVG Anti-Virus (free for personal use only available)
Download free version:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus…e/lng/us/tpl/v5

link to second avast! antivirus home edition (free for personal use only)
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Please let me know what you decide?

Hello gbloom,
It has been sometime since your last post. Are you still needing help.

Just got back from vacation.
Regarding the anti-virus and firewall, I do have a full license to Symantic, but it is anti-virus only. Using it in combination with Zone alarm and Ad-aware seem to work fine.

I still need advise on the best way to get rid of the home page hijacker ishost.exe
(and any other problems you see in the printouts)

Thanks for the help.
