Hi gators06 and welcome to Security Cadets Forum l forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

dan
Hi gators06

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks dan
I cant find the operating system disk at the moment….. so if there is a way to try to get rid of it i'd appreciate it i probably will be gettin a new computer soon….
Hi gators06, have not forgot you , just a little busy and hope to be back with you soon. I'm happy to try and help you clean your system as long as you don't use this machine for sensative information and taken onboard my advice. Thanks dan
Hi gators06

Ok couple of questions first
Are you aware Win ME is no longer receiving security updates from Microsoft as it's no longer a supported OS.?
Does your McAfee have a current subscription for updates.?

You may want to print these instructions for reference

We have a few malware processes and files which we need to get rid of.
Please be patient, and follow all of the instructions as given. Please do not reboot unless it is part
of the fix, or you have no other choice. While you are following the fix, you will find it helpful to have
a pen and paper handy to take any notes, so you can let me know what happens.
Typical information that will be helpful will be:
  • Files or folders that will not delete properly
  • Any errors that occur when following a fix or during bootup
  • Notes on your system's operation (sluggish internet, popups, etc)
  • The more information we have, the better our chances to clean your system!

Firstly you have No firewall installed so lets put that right, please download from this choice:

For your firewall try Sygate Personal Firewall
or Kerio Personal Firewall v2.1.5

I myself use zone alarms firewall on windows me, This was the last version that was ok for w/me
ZoneAlarm version:6.1.744.001 I believe Later versions are not compatible with windows me.
You can find it Here
Remember you only need one antivirus and one firewall running
__________________________

If your anti virus is not able to pick up updates I recommend you uninstall "McAfee" via add and remove programs in the control panel
do this after you have the new av program installed.
These programs are essential to prevent you from getting reinfected:
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. Please download and install one antivirus program from the following list, download the latest signatures, and do a full system scan.

  • AVG check that its compatable with your sytem

  • Avast Home Edition

Without these programs, you will be quickly reinfected, and we would just be wasting our time trying to clean your computer.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

When you have Installed spybot search and destroy I want you to disable "Teatimer" It may interfere with our fix we will reable it once clean.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
    First:
    - Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
    - Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
    Second:
    - Open Spybot S&D
    - Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
    - Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
    - If your firewall raises a question, say OK
    - Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
    - Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
    - Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

    _________________________

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware Install the newest version SE 1.06.
You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
Before running adaware download vx2_cleaner and follow Instruction from web page
