My mother has an HP MCE a1450n and she is experiancing the same problem. The worst part is nobody else seems to be having this issue! A google search only turns up 10 results. I'm about ready to format the hard drive and reinstall windows! Any suggestions would be well appreciated!

Not sure if I can help with this specific error myself but can you access data on the drive, you could try try a cleaning CD inside the unit just to clear off any possible dirt/dust off the laser itself see if it makes any difference. Other suggestions… have you tried turning off the auto insert notification at all, info on how to do this can be found here -> Turn Off the CD-ROM Autorun

I'm glad to find someone else with this problem! Thanks for the replies. It seems weird. Like I said it goes away after the initial time I put in a cd or dvd. To get rid of the blue screen hang up I have to do a ctrl\alt\del and close disc_gui. I do have a program from hp call Discovery which is some sort of gaming thing through media center and it seems to have the same kind of blue screen behind it. Not sure if it is all related. Maybe I'll try the autorun thing.

I'm also havging the same problem. I get that "Media Detection in Progress" screen when i try to play a CD. But, when i play a dvd, it seems to work fine. Did any of you able to get it fixed or any other suggestions. Would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Add me to the list of troubled users. *Almost* everytime I put a CD in I have to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill the application in Task Manager… That's the only thing I know to try.

Do you all have HP Media Center PC's? If so, we should bombard their support for an answer.

Anybody have some kind of an idea on what would cause this?

Yes: mine is an HP Media Center PC, and I tend to agree: the only way to figure this out is going to be through HP.

It seems that someone else saw a connection with DISCcover games.

I opened up Media Center and clicked on "HP Games." There before me was the offending blue screen, complete with the goofy triangular mouse cursor with the sphere behind it. This app looks for PC games to run in the "DISCover Console" every time you put in a CD. It's supposed to recognize non-game disc (obviously, it doesn't). There aren't any games installed, but there are a bunch of trials. I just uninstalled it using Add/Remove programs.
Annoyingly, "HP Games" is still listed along wtih My Music, My TV, etc.; and clicking on it now results in an error, "cannot find file C:/…DISC/GameGuide/discgameguide.html. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct." To fully remove, right click on HP Games and choose "remove."

Yep, I finally just uninstalled DISCover as well. I contacted HP a few times and it seemed like they had no idea what DISCover even was! One of them was convinced the problem was a virus-which it was not. How can they have no idea what the program is when they knew my whole system since it was registered? So the morale to the story-don't rely on HP support for all your cures. Thanks for the help in figuring this out!

Add me to the list to. I have a week old hp a1610 Media Center and I am having the same problem.
No information on HP.com about the problem either that I could find. I sure hope someone finds the fix.

Hi,
I think if you have a look at the previous two posts in this thread (about uninstalling DisCover) it might do the trick for you as well.
You could always consider trying it and see how you get on, but as always its your call. With a brand new machine, I can understand how fed up you must be.

Yes John- The only way if could find to fix it was to uninstall DISCover. It seems like a pointless program.
