My PC persistently has a prcess named "System" using nearly all the system's resources. Windows taks manager shos CPU usage by this porcess in the high 90's mostly, and hardly ever less than 80%. I am wondering if this is malware, and how get rid of it. Here is my hijackthis log.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi

I thought you had suceeded for me, but after running fine for 2 or 3 hours, the problem has returned.

I have observed this behaviour previously.

I am afraid if I shut down, I will see what has happened in the past. That is, when I try to shut down, the system will stop all disk activity, and the the LED showing the system is working will go out, but the monitor will continue to display "windows is shutting down." I can force it to shut down only by holding the power button, but then the system will fail to boot next time. It will show the message about a problem last time, what do you want to do - safe mode, last good etc. I have a cordless keyboard and the system does not respond to it at that point, but even when I use a normal keyboard (from my partner's computer) all options produce the same result.

The start option defaults to "start windows normally". If I interrupt it with the reset button a couple of times, eventually windows will start.

I really appreciate your help with this, and your prompt response last time.

No change - except just at the moment the process not started. The latest log is below. Could it be hardware? What would be the effect of renaming system.dll temporarily? Thanks again for all your trouble.

It is System that is high, not System Idle. However, at the moment it is running fine. Using the techniques of restarts etc that I have described before, I have managed to run for up to a week without trouble, and then the problem returns - with a vengeance. Can we leave this thread open for a week or so, in case that happens again? I struck another problem, with your web site, which I thought I should mention in case it is a permanent problem. I will try again later, but when I tried to use the PayPal donate link, I received an error message saying "try again later". Thanks again for your considerable help. David
I am afraid is has happened again. I have included the latest log below.

I am not sure, but I think I have noticed that this problem kicks in on weekends. there are two activities scheduled for the weekend:
1. a full virus scan be AVG plus firewall - on Saturday (today). the problem commenced whislt that was running, but I am not sure of an exact association. I uninstalled it and dowloaded and reinstalled, but (as would be expected) that did not stop the process running. I had been suspicious of this before, and asked AVG if they had any ideas. I was them who told me to run Hijackthis.
2. a backup using Nero = on Sunday, so that is not it.

The other observation I have made that the process "system" starts at windows startup, but is one of the later processes to start. It happens when my scanner is initiating.

Regards

David

Here is the log, which I notice does not list "system" as a running process - but it was running at around 90% at the time.

One more thing: when trying to read up on possibilities, I noticed my Windows Help and Support is missing, or at least does not activate when I try to run it. can you help me with how I can restore that? Dvid
When Avg is scanning, your system will be real slow. It's scanning the files on the PC for infections. My PC and everyone else that has a Anti-Virus program will have that issue when the scan is running. After the scan is finished, the PC resources will go back to normal.
• Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
1. Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
2. Copy/paste or type the following in the command window:

C:\blbeta.exe /expert

3. Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
4. Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
5 Click "Scan".
6. After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
7. The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present…like "wbemtest.exe".
8. Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

Next:
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select ""Quarantine".".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.

Unfortunately, I made an error here. I deleted rather than quarantined the entries. The scan took almost 6 hours, and I forgot that instruction.
