Hello Saviors

My computer is screwed up. After I do a Google search, when I click on a URL I am often redirected to a site offering to sell me similar items.
For instance, I searched Mavic (a bike wheel mfr). When I try to go to their site, the browser clicks again on its own and sends me to a page (these vary) where a few websites that sell the wheels are listed.

Here is my log:

Hope you can help. I've run McAfee AntiSpyware, Spyware Blaster, CW Shredder.

Hi russ6789,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hello Tim

Oops! I'm okay now. I guess I don't know how the site works.

When I didn't get a reply for a while, I poked around and ran everything in the topic "Before Posting ……" and the problem persisted.
So I found and ran "How to remove JUPK ….."
That took care of the problem. The redirecting when using Google has quit.

Then I wrote a new post about all that. I see now that I should have added it to the first post.

Anyway….

Here are the logs created in the fix process:

I also did a few other fixes suggested in a topic something like - "now that's over, here's more stuff to try out."

If you can see any remaining problems in the logs, I'd love to hear about it. However, I'm in Atlanta and I've got to quit for the night.

Thanks
Russell

Kaspersky Online Scan report
New HJT
Dear Tim Thanks for the input. I can't get to it until the weekend as there is so much I evidently need to do to fix my system and I haven't the time until then. I have CC Cleaner already. When I checked my Microsoft AntiSpyware, I found it expired in July. I assume you want me to download the new version and then disable it as you indicate in your post. I'll do that as well as everything else and post the results. Thank you very much for your help! Russell
Hello russ6789

That is fine no problem. Try not to use your computer on the internet as much as possible while it is infected.

When I checked my Microsoft AntiSpyware, I found it expired in July. I assume you want me to download the new version and then disable it as you indicate in your post.

It is your choice if you want to install a updateded verison (Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection) I just need it disabled so it won't interfere with fix.
The program I need to make sure that is update is AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Just follow instruction posted to check for updates.

tim s
Hello Tim

I attempted to do all that you asked me to do. The Fixware repert looks about the same as last time. I downloaded that software again to be sure I was doing that scan with the proper tool.

So, I will post that report, the HijackThis I did next, the Kaspersky report, and a last HijackThis report.

One problem I had is that the left edge of the screen is cut off when I am in safe mode and I don't know how to change that so I can see what options on the left edge of the page are checked.

The first two 017 items you listed did show up, I ran Fix Checked, and they are gone.

Here are the reports:

Hi russ6789,

Fixwareout has been updated at bleepingcomputer.com I'm going to get you to download it from there the other link may not have been updated. I need you to delete the copy you have and try again. But first do the following:
—————————————————–

It looks like you have two HiJackThis.exe 's the last log was run from here. C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\wz1244\HijackThis.exe and one from C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe
I need to get you to delete the one that is inside of Temp folder. Please do the following:
We will need to show hidden files

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
—————————————————–

Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following file just what is in red:

Files:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\wz1244\HijackThis.exe
—————————————————-

Now lets create a short on you desktop for the other HiJackThis.exe
  • Use Explorer to navigate to C: drive
  • Double-Click on Program Files Folder
  • Right click on the HiJackThis.exe icon
  • From the menu choose send to >> then choose desktop (create shortcut).
Now you can run HJT from your desktop.
Done close all open windows.

—————————————————-

Here I am going to repeat some of the previous post that you have done before.
Please so the following:

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make. It can be enabled when your clean.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
——————————————————–

Disable program can interfer with HJT fix.
Open AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
  • Close Ewido
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5(Ewido) Tray Icon and choose Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
All anti-sypware applications need to be disabled for this to work.
———————————————————

Make sure to run the entire fix, including the DNS section. This is very important.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • Once the desktop loads, post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.

——————————-

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
—————————————————————–

Here is why HJT cannot be in a Temp folder it would be deleted along with backups.

  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to put check in for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla. If already checked move to next step.

Hello Tim At present, I have two problem that prevent me from beginnig the fix you posted and I am going to wait until these issule are resolved before starting. 1. I do not have Microsoft Antispyware. When I opened Microsoft Antispyware last time, I was directed to download Windows Defender which seems to be the new, improved Microloft Antispyware. I did as I was directed and downloaded it. When I open it, there is no "left pane, Real-Time Protection" etc. so I don't know whether what I choose to do has the effect you want. Can you take a look at this issue, tell me if I scewed up and need to reload or delete something, and if I don't tell me how to diable Defender properly? 2. I also need to know how to see the left edge of the screen in Safe Mode. It makes no sense to me to try and follow your directions when I cannot see or check some of the options. Meanwhile, I have done the HjackThis part of the recent post. I now have only one version and it is on my desktop. Thanks very much. Russell
Hi russ6789,

I am sorry for the confusion. I didn't know you had downloaded Windows Defender. I will post directions on how to disable (turn off) that program so it does not stop (interfere) with fix.

Do the following if AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 icon is in the system tray at bottom right corner of computer screen near clock. If it is not there skip to next step.
Disable program can interfer with HJT fix.
Open AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Tray Icon and choose Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
———————————————————

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click Options
  • You will have to Scroll down this screen until you see Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Use Use Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Click on the save button
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

All anti-spyware programs need to be disabled for this to work.

Make sure to delete all previous copies of Fixwareout so that a fresh updated verison is used.

Make sure to run the entire fix, including the DNS section. This is very important.
Please download FixWareout from :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

You have said in previous post that you already have Ccleaner. Please make sure it is setup as follows so Temp file can be cleaned that showed up on pervious scans and to shorten scan time:

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," make sure there is check mark in the "Cookies" Box It should already have a check mark. (You will need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to put check in for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla. If already checked move to next step.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "System," Make sure there is a check mark in "Temporary Files"
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
  • You will need to reboot here if not ask to do so.

In this step here you may have already done this before but it is important to have it setup this way.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Hello I ran the fixes but didn't post the results before leaving town for the holidays. I'll get back to you after the first. The first scan still seems to have done nothing. I may need to be advised specifically each item that needs to be disabled based on a review of my Hijackthis log. I think some spyware protection I am overlooking is inhibiting the scan. Thanks Russell
Hi russ6789, That is fine. I will need to see those logs form my last post to see what maybe causing a problem. Post when you can. Have a safe Holiday. tim
