Another jupk victim

Hello,

As the title says, I have unwittingly become another victim of the rather insidious jupk. Sadly I have no idea where this came from (I suspect the daughter, though I know from past experience she would deny it), but I would be extremely grateful for any assistance in removing it as it’s now preventing me from accessing any .co.uk websites.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.Use Add/Remove Programs and remove HijackThis. What you have now is out dated.

you can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe .

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here plese use the [Add Reply] button below.

As previously mentioned, I'm not entirely certain as to where this problem originated, but it may be of some interest to note that having originally been stymied by jupk, I found that later in the day it had metamorphosed into a bnxu problem; the sites I was being redirected to, some of which being quite insalubrious, remained the same.

Similarly, whereas yesterday I was completely unable to access any .co.uk sites (in both I.E. and Firefox) I have found that I now can do so, though it may be worth bearing in mind that I have only in the past hour just turned my PC on. It does tend to make one wonder, however, about the how and the what that is going on, though here I must confess to having scant knowledge of malware and spyware implementation techniques.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"




Delete these Files if listed:

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.



Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns


Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two


Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Many thanks. I've taken your advice, read the articles and installed the programs. All I have to do now is educate the daughter, but at 16 (going on 26) it can be a little difficult. Once again, many thanks.
