My computer seems to be running very slow, I do daily scans with Trend Micro PC-cillin and spybot Search and Destroy and they have found nothing.
Here is my latest Hijackthis log, maybe you can find something that they missed
Thanks for looking.

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Go to where you have HJT currently installed and right click on hijackthis.exe ( it looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger ) and rename it to scanner.exe .

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button and not the New Topic Button
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Okay Ken,
Here is my latest scan, I did have several applications running when this scan was done, I hope it doesn't create a problem.
Thanks
Steve

Steve :D

Still see nothing bad on your log. The reason we renamed HJT is because there are infections being written that will evade HJT and by renaming it , it will pick up those bad entries.

Lets do a few things.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you do an Online installation, it will install automatically.
  • If you do an Offline installation, you will have to save the setup file to your hard disk and run it. Your call.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to do an Offline Installation and save the setup file in case I need it in the future

Run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Lets run the trial of AVG Anti Spyware and see what it comes up with.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Let me see the AVG report and a new HJT log please.
Okay Ken,
Here's my AVG & HJT scans, as you can see AVG found nothing.
Should I not have AVG and TrendMicro running at the same time? Should I go to msconfig and take AVG out of my start menu, or perhaps uninstall it?
Thanks,
Steve

Steve :D

Your log still looks fine  No malware that I can see.

AVG Anti Spyware is one of the best products on the market, and its yours to keep after the trial. You will still be able to check for updates, run scans and remove what it finds, you will just lose the background feature after the trial. You should have that disabled anyway, go back to my instructions and open AVG and disable the background guard feature and it wont conflict with Trendmicro.

You can remove these with HJT. Most logs I look at have 15 or so 04 entries running, these run when windows starts, this really slows you down, you only have a handful and these can be done manually. Just save the link in my earlier post for Java and check it on your own about once a month and when it goes to Update 11, go for it.

If your not involved with any international sites, you can remove this

One last thing we can do is to check your system for a Rootkit, a Rootkit is something that goes undetected by your Operating System and any anti virus scans.

Download and run this quick scan and lets see if anything turns up, post the report for me to see please.

Steve, I believe the entries in your RK Revealer log are legit and there is no need for alarm. I am looking into it further and will be back to you in the AM. Ken :D
Steve, :D

Those are false positives and nothing to worry about.

Did this just come on suddenly, do you remember your system slowing down after you installed new hardware or a software program?????

If your up to it, we can run one last program to check your system. It may take a half hour or so, if this comes up clean than I am going to suggest some windows support forums that may be better to deal with a slow computer.

Download the Spysweeper 5.2 Free Trial
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and be sure to download and install the Free 5.2 Trial and not t the free online scan.
  • Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it.
  • If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper
  • You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
  • Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives.
  • Check Local Disc C.
  • Under What to Sweep, check every box.
  • Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.
  • When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next
  • From 'Results', select the Session Log tab.
  • Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.
  • Exit Spy Sweeper.
Restart your computer, and then please copy and paste the SpySweeper log into this thread.
Ken, I really don't remember if the problem occured after installing any hardware or software. When it first started to happen I attributed it to other things, to many app's running, to many windows open, you get the picture. When I finally decided I did have a problem I tested with only one specific app running at a time, and I still had the problem. My brother suggested that I might look into it being a hardware problem and that I may want to try some of the free online hardware testing web sites, but I'm afraid they may also install other undesirable stuff on my computer, would you have any recommendations? I'm sorry, I'm not sure which version (standard?) of the free trial Spysweeper software you wanted me to install. I was offered two options, one with anti-virus, and one without. When I opted for the one that would include the anti-virus scan I was told that I would need to uninstall my Trend Micro PC-Cillin. I know from when I attempted to install and use the kaspersky free trial, very ugly things happened and I had to use system restore just to get my computer to run. Thanks, Steve
Steve

When you go to the Spysweeper page, if you look way down on the bottom of the page you will see a link for

Spy Sweeper 5.2 Free Trial

Lets try and run this program, if all is ok I can link you to some sites to test your computer.
Ken, I went to the bottom of the page and I downloaded the Webroot SpySweeper 5.2 free trial install Executable to my desk top. As with the last time I tried to install the software I was given two install options, one with anti-virus protection and one without. When I tried the install with the anti-virus protection, I was again told I would need to uninstall my Trend Micro PC-Cillin, so I opted for the installation without the anti-virus. I then did a full system scan and nothing was found. Thanks, Steve
Hello Steve :D

Well we ran numerous scans that found nothing and removed a couple of entries from your HJT log and your computer is still slow. As time goes on , the more and more you use your system, downloading programs, uninstalling programs, there is just more and more not needed files just building up. Sometimes it could have been a poorly written program you installed, sometimes uninstalling a program may uninstall something it shouldn't have, maybe one of your programs is conflicting with another or some hardware is failing. So I think I can say that this is not virus or malware related. My own system got a little bogged down about 6 months ago and I went through the Add-Remove Programs and I uninstalled any program that I never used, had no intention of ever using or just didn't need. All together there where 11 of them. My system booted up faster and seemed zippier than before, so you may want to give yours some house cleaning.
