Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
• Please do the following.
  • Please click Start > Run > and type Regedit
  • Click OK and wait for the Registry Editor to open
  • Now, please click on File and then Export
  • This will bring up the Export Registry File window
  • At the bottom of which you will see an option for Export range
  • Click the option for Selected branch and in the field underneath that, copy and paste:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
  • Enter a file name of O20, and save the file to your Desktop
  • Now go to your Desktop, right click on the file you have created, select Open With and choose Notepad.
  • Now please copy the contents of that file into this thread.
• Lastly, perform an onlinescan with Panda Online. Please use this scanner instead of any other scanner! You have to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

• Post back with the contents of O20.reg, the results of the Panda scan and a new HijackThis log.
Hi thanks again

Good! Your log looks clean.

• Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again! :)
Hi,

I just read a post from the creator of fixwareout - the tool you first ran. I'd like you to also do the following.

• Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
1. Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
2. Copy/paste or type the following in the command window:

C:\blbeta.exe /expert

3. Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
4. Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
5 Click "Scan".
6. After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
7. The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present…like "wbemtest.exe".
8. Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
Hi… thanks again..
This is my log

Hi,

Good job! We found the hidden file. Now, two things I'd like you to do. Before you begin, you will need to show hidden files:
- Go to Start > open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK

First: We would like you to upload the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\cswyy.exe to examine because you have a new variant of the infection.

Go to: http://www.castlecops.com/f81-Unknown_Files.html

To upload the file:
- Click "New Topic"
- In the "Subject" space, type in: Wareout File
- In the body, just state that this file was found while working with me to fix the URL hijack problem
- Next, scroll down to where you see "Filename"
- Click "Browse" and a "File Upload" box will open
- Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\cswyy.exe
- Click cswyy.exe and then click "Open" and the "File Upload" box will close
- Click "Add Attachment"
- Click "Submit"

Second: Once the file has been uploaded, now we delete it to get it off of your system.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the quote box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

File to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cswyy.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions.

This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply by using Add/Reply

Hi, Let me explain what is happening. You had what is called a wareout or dns hacker infection. One of the symptoms is a file that begins with cs and three random letters, or cs***.exe - and since those letters are random, when you reboot, the file changes because those last three letters change. So, if you shut down your computer after last night's scan, the file will change again when you reboot. So you will have to follow the directions in one step. You will need to run Blacklight again, then upload the file, and then download Avenger and delete it according to the instructions I provided. Lastly, you're going to need to change ALL your passwords AFTER your system is clean. While you still have that file on your system, you still can get reinfected.
Hi again Sorry to be a pain. Understand exactly what your saying and it should be easy enough to remove it. But after i run the blacklight program and it finds that hidden file with the cs***.exe (this times its cslzq.exe) i goto find it.. but its not there. Ive selected show all files ect ect. I also tried running avenger and enter the new file name… but still no good. Any futher help will be greatly appreciated. 12/03/06 12:04:04 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.47 initialized 12/03/06 12:04:04 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2) 12/03/06 12:04:04 [Note]: 7019 4 12/03/06 12:04:04 [Note]: 7005 0 12/03/06 12:04:08 [Note]: 7006 0 12/03/06 12:04:08 [Note]: 7011 1640 12/03/06 12:04:08 [Note]: 7026 0 12/03/06 12:04:08 [Note]: 7026 0 12/03/06 12:04:22 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1020 12/03/06 12:08:03 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\cslzq.exe 12/03/06 12:08:03 [Note]: 7002 32 12/03/06 12:08:03 [Note]: 7003 1 12/03/06 12:08:03 [Note]: 10002 1 12/03/06 12:08:39 [Note]: 7007 0
Okay, no problem. I assume you set your system to show hidden files - see, Post #9. If you did and you still don't see the file, then let's do it the other way.

• Use Blacklight in exactly the same way as before but, when it shows the item found, select the entry and click the Rename button.
- Next to the cs***.exe entry, "rename" should appear.
- Click "Next".
- Blacklight will give you a warning if you are sure. Click "Yes".
- Then it will tell you: "Your computer will reboot now"
- Click "Yes".

Your computer will reboot now.

Post back and let me know how it went.
Gone!!
Thanks very much for your help!
Sorry i couldnt post the file in castlecops.com… i just couldnt find it.
This is the last blacklight i did.
