I have a Windows XP machine running both AVG and Spy Sweeper. I've downloaded the HJT and have ran it. Here's my log file:

If anyone can help me, I'd really appreaciate it!!!
Hi William_KS
Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

You look to be using two onboard Anti-Virus Programs. Doing so could cause conflicts between the two and result in providing your PC with less protection, rather than more. I suggest Uninstalling either Symantec AV or, AVG in Add/Remove Programs.

Disable SpySweeper:
You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Next:
Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htmI suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Fix the items identified in the HijackThis log below. Your call.

Optional - WILDTANGENT WildTangent's privacy policy used to state that they also collect and share individuals information but this is no longer the case, what they say. It's considered to be foistware even though it may not spy anymore. . Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Select if found Wildtangent entry and click ‘Remove’. I leave it to you to decide if you want to keep it.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Save this Page to MyStuff - res://C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/savewebpage.html

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:
Please note: The following are optional removals. If they are fixed here they must also be Uninstalled in Add/Remove Programs.

C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar1.dll
C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/saveimagestofolder.html
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/saveimages.html
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/saveltof.html
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/savelink.html
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/savepagetofolder.html
C:\Program Files\AskBar\bar\bin\askBar.dll/savewebpage.html

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

If you were unable to delete any of the files, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Well, I am currently running a virus scan. So far, though, it seems to have fixed the problem.

Here's the requested log file. Thanks again for all the help on this mess.

Once this finished, I started another virus scan and it didn't find anything. It looks like you got it fixed. Thanks one and all for all the help. When I get my next paycheck, I'll see about getting some to donate!!!

Thanks!!!
Hi William_KS

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

Each PC requires one active Anti-Virus and one active Firewall. You look to be running two Anti-Virus Programs. Doing so may result in providing your PC with less protection rather than more, due to conflicts between the two programs. I would suggest Uninstalling AVG7 since it is free and you paid for the Norton Security Suite.
If your Nortons does not include a FIREWALL, or if you are using the native XP firewall, we recommend you download one of the following free firewalls, or another of your choice.

Why do we not recommend the Windows XP FIREWALL .
The Windows XP Firewall is just one-way; it only scans
incoming traffic. These Personal Firewalls look at incoming data and also look carefully at the data leaving your computer, so that sensitive information like your credit card numbers, email address, phone numbers, and social security number do not get stolen.

Below you will find a link to Zone Alarm, which has a good free firewall for personal use, another for kerio (free for personal use) and a link to sygate. Note that it is not recommended to run two firewalls simultaneously, not even along with the new Microsoft firewall, which is not recommended.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/cata…sku_list_za.jsp
http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html
http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_pro.htm

Then:
To disable the XP firewall: Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Properties > Advanced…. Remove the check mark from the "Internet Connection Firewall" box and click "OK." Now, install your new firewall, without any further delay and certainly before going onto the internet.

Next:

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896
O16 - DPF: Win32 Classes -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Your Hijack This logfile looks to be free of malware.

If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available and are recommended for every PC connected to the Internet. Prevention is much better than the alternative.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.
