Suddenly slow at re-boot and opening windows

45 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

It first started when I re-booted my puter and just befor Windows loaded a text in the upper right screen saying to "setup F2" or "boot F12"
After assessing what I felt was no problems in either setup or boot I pressed "continue F1" it then stated 256 MB of memory used. I have a 256 and 512 stick. I have been using all memory up to now. Its getting slower and slower over the course of 5 hours.
Hopefully Ive given enough information
Thanks for any help you can offer

Hi calias69and welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
dan
Hi calias69

First of all - Points to note :
Your version of HJT is outdated "HijackThis v1.98.2" latest version is "HijackThis v1.99.1" , please download the latest version from the following location Here
___________________________

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
- Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
- Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
- Open Spybot S&D
- Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
- Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
- If your firewall raises a question, say OK
- Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
- Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
__________________________

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Thanks dan

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please include new HJT log,and the smitfraud report in your next post

Thanks dan
Hi Dan
No I didnt set these two restrictions of 06. They have been there for a couple of months that I know of but dont know why.
Incidentally when I have been doing a virus scan using AVG, I notice almost every time a virus (worm I think) has been found. I scan at least 5 times per week with downloads every day.
Here are the two files you asked for. Hope this is more of a help
Thanks Calias69

Hi Dan This is getting interesting. First you mention to shut down Windows when I reboot in safe mode..just after I update the AVG antispyware. Would you explain how to shut down Windows Second you instruct me to Reboot in Normal Mode….close the the last. How do I do that Thanks calias69
Hi, sorry if it wasn't clear to you. ok, from where I tell you to boot into safe mode. Then you run smitfraud option 2. A reboot "may" be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically then start it manually but I want the pc to go into safe mode for the rest of the cleaning, Running ATF and The AVG scan, when that is done close down and restart in normal mode. Now do the kaspersky scan for me. Hope that helped. dan
Hi Dan Yes I understand all your instructions on what to do after I reboot in Safe Mode… however Im just a little confused on this ONE PART of the instruction. Below is the instructions. See the part where its says SHUT DOWN WINDOWS…on the line just after Reboot you comperter in safe mode. I need to know how to shut down Windows befor I turn the power off. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode. • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power. • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on. • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected. • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode. • Login on your usual account. calias69
Hi calias69, shut down Windows do this as when you shut down normally, go to start, shutdown, choose shutdown from the drop down tab, when shut down switch off from the mains supply.
Wait the time mentioned 30seconds ,then start up and go into safe mode.
remember if your not sure ask, I'm here to guide you through.
dan
OK Dan Im almost ready Only one more tidbit of info. In post #9 you mention at the end to do a kaspersky spyware scan Did you want me to download the trial version of kaspersky and scan with it OR scan with the AVG spyware scan. calias69
Hi Dan
WOW
First I have to tell you I had to do the AVG scan in Safe Mode 2 times because the firt time it took 2 1/2 hours and "froze" at 240,000 objects scanned. With one trojan quaranteened. I re-scanned for 30 minutes and at 165,000 objects scanned it froze again, this time it quaranteend 2 viruses. The same trojan as in scan #1 plus another one as seen in the report Im sending.
Also when I re-started in normal mode the puter froze befor Windows loaded asking for F1 to continue or F2 to enter set up. I pressed F1 continue. (incidentally Ive had to do this procedure since my puter was infected from a few days bach)
So here are the scanned texts
Thanks
