I'm having occasional problems when clicking on a link in internet explorer. I am getting redirected to various search engine sites. Adawe and spybot didn't find anything.
Here's my Hijack log;

Hello askahlon and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. We are currently looking over your log. As I am an still in training here, everything that I post to you must be reviewed by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a small delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a suggested fix. Thanks for your patience! Dave
Hello Askahlon,

I recommend you print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{65AB8567-0778-4690-AE51-EFE4F25F08B4}: NameServer = 85.255.116.103,85.255.112.214
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9BCF9320-9257-49A9-823F-A1AFDD471CF9}: NameServer = 85.255.116.103,85.255.112.214
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.103 85.255.112.214
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{65AB8567-0778-4690-AE51-EFE4F25F08B4}: NameServer = 85.255.116.103,85.255.112.214
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.116.103 85.255.112.214

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Dave

Hello Askahlon,

Looking better, still some work to do though.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following files for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSGFI.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMFSV.EXE

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

Next run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log along with the results from the virus scan.

Dave

Hello Askahlon,

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Please delete the following files (if you're not sure how to do this then see the example in green text below):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSGFI.EXE<–File Only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMFSV.EXE<–File Only

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on filetogo.bye and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

Reboot and post a new HJT log for review. Please also let me know how things are running.

Dave
The system seems to be working fine at the moment.

Hi askahlon, I forgot to ask in my last post. Were you able to find and delete those 2 files? If so I can go ahead and post some suggestions for staying clean in the future. Dave
Hello Askahlon,

Thanks and good to hear things are running better. Please read through the following to help prevent re-infection.

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create.

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

You are running an older version of Sun Java which needs updating:

* Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
* Accept the license agreement by clicking the radio button.
* Under Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 9, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
* Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Enviroment and then reboot your PC.
* Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
* Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.

Also, it does not appear from your log that you have any Antivirus program running. It is absolutely critical that you put one in place to prevent re-infection. See below for some free options to try.

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here is a list of some free and evaluation versions to try: AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Online Scanners:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.Kerio Personal Firewall

Outpost Firewall
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
