Welcome to Tom Coyote sorry about the delay.

You didn't uninstall Symantec completely. Do this.
  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to Symantec Network Drivers Service
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)

O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

Look for and delete this file.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

The rest of your log looks fine  , let me know if this helped. Post a new HJT log as your current log is fairly old and things may have changed.

FYI..in a month or so AVG Free will be no more, they are discontinuing it , if you wan to keep it you will have to upgrade to the paid version.
Ken
thanks for the reply….sorry I took a while to find it and reply.
did all that you suggested. my main problem I guess is with IE. it opens slow and when I download a video file, it takes almost a minuite to even open the creative media viewer. I thought maybe I needed to upgrade the drivers, and did so. this had little effect on the problem. I also then upgraded to IE 7 hoping that the lag would be repaired, it has not been. I ran the ATF cleaner program and another HJT here are the results.
PLEASE NOTE:
I did not find a exe. file in the SND Srvc.

Look for and delete this file.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe

also symantec files showed up again

thanks so much for your help. I hope all is well.
Rich
Rich,

I see nothing bad on your log. not to say something could be hidden. We can try a few things. Symantec is known for installing files all over your system, sometimes its pretty hard to clean up. Part of that program was still running as a service and sometimes it could conflict with your other AV program. Its stopped so that should eliminate that problem.

Lets run two programs, they will turn up anything bad.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Boot up normally

Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on your HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.
Panda ActiveScan <—-Accept default settings

It's important that I see both reports so be sure to save them and post them both along with a new HJT log.
ken
thanks for the info…did all as suggested. the Panda program took forever. next time i'll pack two sandwiches. I also was trying to remember when my problems seemed to start. I remember that I was tapped by microsoft with a message that I might have a counterfeit copy of windows…I kept ignoring the messages and then finally went to the website and got the problem repaired by calling them and a tech gave me a key code to cancel out the message. when I first got the message about the counterfeit windows I noticed the programs running slower but I chalked it up to the use of AOL by my wife. dont know if that means anything or not. thanks for listening. here are the reports for panda, AVG 7.5 and HJT. thanks again
Rich

also another question maybe you know the answer to…
most of my E-mail in which I receive photos, they do not open but appear as boxes with a x in the corner. I have tried to show photo but this does not work and I must open all as attachments individually.
thanks for the help…after the removal of the files from your last instructions the computer seems to be running somewhat better….thanks.

Rich, :D

Go to the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and look for a program called MySpyProtector, if its present, uninstall it. This is a rogue program that gives you false positives to prod you into buying there product. Never Ever click on any thing that pops up in your browser that offers to scan your computer for free, you will get infected real quick that way.

If its there or not, look for it here C:\Program Files\MySpyProtector and delete the entire folder.

This is still showing up, maybe you looked in the wrong folder.
C:\WINDOWS\inf\alchem.inf

Not showing pictures could be any of many things, that is a topic alone.
Try opening IE and going to Tools> Internet Options> Advanced> and look under Multimedia and make sure there is a checkmark in Show Pictures.

Here are some great forums and links to windows problems, you may find your answer there.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Let me know if you found MySpyProtector and was able to remove it.

The rest of your log looks fine

Open up AVG and go to the Quarantine folder and remove it all, nothing it there you want to keep.

You can run this system cleaner everyweek or so to stop the build up of temp and internet temporary files that will bog you down after awhile.

Be sure to follow the instructions in my previous post about System Restore, you had some bad entries in there and if you ever use it to revert your system back to an earlier date , you can reinfect yourself all over again. Be sure to create a new Restore Point.

Here ya go….
System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Glad all is well
Ken, this is getting frustrating…. I have hardly used the computer at all and it is dragging once again. it is slow to the point of distraction. I ran another HJT and included… any thoughts?
thanks so much for all your help. Rich

Rich,

Sorry your still having problems. Lets do a couple of things. It looks like you have windows set to start with the Selective Startup and it may not be showing us everything that is starting.

Go to Start> Run and type in msconfig and click on Enter. Make sure that Normal Startup is selected, click Apply> OK , reboot your system.

Now…
There are infections being written to evade Hijackthis, so go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon [external image: Posted Image]( Looks like a stick of red dynamite with a plunger ) and rename it to Scanner.exe, run the program to Scan and Save a Log File and post a new log into this thread.
Ken, here is the new scan…boy what a load of carp** I have in this tray…is there anyway to remove it? as you can see, if I didnt use selective startup I would never get anything done. :o all that I would like to run is AVG spy and ad ware, spyware guard, and zone alarm. is that allright? what do you suggest?
thanks, Rich

Rich,

You really don't have that much starting up at windows startup, but you can look these over and remove the ones you can do manually.

This is a good program but has always been a little intrusive for me
You can open the program and under preferences there is an option to disable it.

You may have an overkill with Spyware Programs. You have Spyware Treminator, Spyware Doctor and AVG Anti Spyware all running in the background. I would uninstall AVG as it is a resource hog. Its just a trial anyway. AVG Anti Virus is going to stop offering the free version pretty soon so you will have to upgrade to the paid version or find another AV Program

Outside of that , your log looks fine  But we can check for a Rootkit that may be hidden. Run this quick scan and post the log .
