hacker defender and other bugs

My system started acting up about a month ago with a blank ie explorer browser window popping up (I use firefox, not IE). Everytime I close it, it re-opens. This is a home-office computer so I'm pretty careful with it, but a nephew was on it a few weeks ago . . .you know.

I ran Spybot and my Anti-virus and got nothing.

Then I downloaded CounterSpy and it found 5 spyware programs including tspy_sinowal, tspy_hacdef, tspy_agent.to. Tspy_cimuz. I wasn't able to update the dat files for CounterSpy. The program would lock up and tell me that I wasn't connected to the internet, but I was and it was running (I'm waaay out in the country and only have dial-up). I updated my dat files on my AV, re-ran it ant it said it deleted hacker defender.

Following a reboot and another scan, I was told that 'hacker defender' had been deleted yet again (2nd
time) and then again the next day (3rd time).

Now, my computer locks up at the drop of the hat, my CPU seems to run at near 100%, it says I have no more spyware or viruses, but the blank ie browser keeps popping up, ZA pops up and then freezes, and I'm no longer sure what's going on. I checked my start-up and it is running with pretty minimal stuff. I generally leave my computer alone – I'm a newbie as you can probably tell, but I finally decided to try hackerdefender to see if I've missed anything or messed anything up too badly. I ran hijackthis just to get a log to post here in the hope that someone has some idea of what is wrong and what I should do. Any ideas for good security would really be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
Hello Micah 6:8,

Thanks so much for the kind welcome and the help. :wavey:

I did as you asked, but when windows came back up I got a bunch of warnings from Counterspy telling me that a program is trying to add a context menu handler . . named "open with," "virus scan" and a few others.I was allowing it because I thought it had to do with SDFix, but then it told me that a program was adding a new entry to my internet safe site named "i.e.search.msn.com" and that this is known spyware. I'm assuming that I should block this, but now what? do I allow all this stuff or block all this stuff? And what about the stuff I've already allowed?? :o

I work form home and have two desktops — so I'm now on the one that's functioning (no, they're not networked).

In the meantime, here are the results of the report.txt and a new hijack this log:

Micah – I created a permanent file for Hijack this and did as instructed and booted to safe mode. I went through "my computer" and found the following files (I assume that's how I'm supposed to do this – is this right?): c:windows\system32\ntos.exe I tried to delete it but it says "cannot delete ntos. It is being used by another person/program. Now what? There's also a c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe do I try to delete that as well??? Evie
