Hello and welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
hi, thanks for your response
did what u hav asked and at first the computer seemed a bit faster, the first phase of windows xp starting. but it still took about 1min 40sec to end and for me to be able to launch windows file explorer.
it might be important to say that i recently corrected some disk problems with disk scan. but the computer was already slow by that time.

winrar while still is pretty slow for the kind of processor and RAM i have, seems slightly faster, but this could just be a placebo effect (for me, not the computer :-) )

when looking at the task manager, the computer doesnt seem to use the duo core cpu properly.

here is the last HJI log

Your HJT log looks clean Let's try this if you have your WinXP installation disks available. System File Check Please go to Start -> Run -> type cmd and press Enter. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please REBOOT your computer. Let me know what the results are.
ok done the System File Check at the command line no cd where asked for, just a bar that showed analysis progress, when it reached end it disappeared without any alert message or results. as u requested, i restarted the computer (still slow). I dont know if this is relevant but recently, when windows starts, Zone alarm displays a message saying that is is initialising and that this message would disappear within seconds. i'm in paris and it's 1:30am. i will get your response/instructions in the morning. sorry, work tomorrow. thanks alot for your help. take care
no, adsl. my internet connection is fast.i have no pbs navigating through internet or even watch streaming video to check out news broadcasts. but but i cant do that while unzipping a multi file archive with winrar, the sound becomes weird (with files on my computer, not only with streaming video files.) . when i first baught the computer, i used to be able to do that and much more simultainiously !
lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
