Hello

My friend's computer has just suddenly stopped showing any web sites. He is running Win XP Home Editor with IE 7 Beta and Firefox. Both browsers are affected.

Welcome back to Tom Coyote

You have numerous infections on this machine, one being NewDotNet that is playing havoc with your internet connection.

Not always but sometimes removing NewDotNet will disrupt your internet access, so download this tool first to your desktop, only use it in the event you lose internet access after removing NewDotNet.
Winsockxpfix

Please open your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet from there if listed. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:

From a computer that has Internet access, click on the following link:
Uninstall .
Download and save uninstall6_90.exe to the Desktop.
Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
Click on the OK button.
After removal, you may be prompted to reboot. Please reboot even if not prompted.

Post a new HJT log as there are other infections we need to remove.

Newdotnet is gone, its garbage

You may want to print this out as you will be offline for most of the fix.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.

Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
Under Reports
Select Automatically generate report after every scan
Un-Select Only if threats were found
Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only , make sure your browser is closed as is all open windows, the only program you should have open is HJT, check these and click on Fix Checked.

Boot your computer into Safemode <– Important

Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
This will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
Next select the Reports icon at the top.
Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Still in Ssfemode, look for and delete these files. Let me know if the file was present but would not let you delete it.

These you will have to search for, they could be in C:\, C:\windows or C:\windows\system32.

Reboot back into normal windows and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Post a new HJT log please along with the AVG report.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was busy all weekend.

First of all I could not find Studio.exe.

But I found the skcxra.exe and deleted that.

I would like to inform you that although I need help with this kind of computer software, I am a database programmer and been programming since 1979. I am telling you this so it might save you time like going into Safe Mode.

Hello Again

No problem on the reply, I work with posters from all over the world and I never know who or when I am going to get a reply back. I guess being a programmer you must live most of your life in Safemode. Most everyday computer users that are not to savvy have a heck of a time booting into it..

Your log is coming along but I see a few remaining problems.

1. Open AVG and go to the Quarantine folder and delete it all, nothing in there you want to keep.

2. You have a lot of bad entries in System Restore, you need to flush it all out because you take the chance of infecting yourself all over again if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date, and it's extremely important that you create a new Restore Point.

3. Lets update your Java as its out of date and could be letting some of this garbage in.

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
It should have an icon next to it:

Select it and click Remove.
Reboot your system.
Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 <–This is what you need to download and install.
Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify

4. If you have a program in the Add-Remove Programs called C:\Program Files\Ebates__MoeMoney__Maker try uninstalling it if it will let you.

5. Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

I have completed the last post from you.

I could not find:

C:\WINDOWS\msnappm.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates__MoeMoney__Maker

But I did Remove the C:\Program Files\Ebates__MoeMoney__Maker through Add/Remove Programs.

I could not find C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET\ICC\icc2000.exe
I could only find C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER and subdirectories

While I was in Add/Remove Programs I removed AOL because hhe is not using AOL any more.

One other issue, when I open IE, it goes to a microsoft site. Can you disable this. I believe I should delete the following:

Good Morning,

I will have to get back to you a little later on today as we are having some connection problems here at work.

I just noticed that you are using an outdated version of HJT, go to where you have it installed and delete the entire folder. Then use the link in my signature at the bottom of this page and download and install version 1.99.1, save the file to your desktop, when you click on the install, it will by default install in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis.

You can remove all these safely,

I have done what your post said. I have upgraded HJT and I have deleted the R1 and R0 entries. I then rebooted. But the IE is still going to a microsoft site even when I set USE BLANK as the default in Internet Options.

I have looked through the HJT log and found O16 two entries that refer to microsoft.com. I have left them there for now. Should I delete them?

Your log looks fine

Both of those 016 entries are legit and should not be removed.

Lets try a couple of things.

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
Delete Cookies
Delete Files > and offline content as well
Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

Lets also try resetting your hosts file.

Download Hoster

Unzip Hoster to your desktop
Open up the Hoster program.
Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
Click Create Back Up
Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
Close the Hoster program

Hi Ken545

I have tried your two suggestions, without success. After I did these two steps I rebooted.

IE setting in Internet Options under Tools is "about:blank".

When IE is opened starts to goto http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=54834 but about 2 seconds later (IE does not have time to go here) it goes to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx.

You had markers in your log for an infection that I thought we might have gotten rid of, but parts of it still may be present. Lets run a couple of tools.

Download the Stand Alone Version of CWShredder to your desktop.

Open CWShredder
Check for Updates
Close out the program. <– Dont run it yet

Boot into Safemode
Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Open CWShredder
Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
Click Fix and click OK at the prompt.
CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
Click Next and then Exit .

Reboot your computer and run this next tool.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Let me see the report from SDFix and a New HJT log please.

Hi Ken545

I guess this infection is a hard one to get out.

I ran CWshedder and it found nothing.

So I stayed in Safe Mode and ran SDFix.

The problem is still there.

Hall,

Your log is clean,

this may be related to the new installation of IE7. I downloaded IE7 myself, I like it but HP Director for my HP All In One printer scanner stopped working. I called HP and they are aware of the problem.

Lets try this, please keep in mind that I am going to be online for the next 3 or 4 hours and then I will be away until Monday around Noon. So run this, reboot and see if it works.

Launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad)
Copy/paste everything inside the quote box

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001
"RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001

In Notepad, go to File and select: Save as
In the Save as prompt:
Save in: Desktop
File Name: repair.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save
Exit out of Notepad.

Back on the Desktop, double-click on the repair.reg file just saved and click on Yes when asked to merge the information into the Registry.

Reboot and give it a go

Hi Ken545 I did what your last post said and now it WORKS. I just reset the Internet Options to about:blank and IE does not go anywhere. Thank you very much. One last question. What software do you recommend to have on WinXP computer. Which Anti-virus and which Anti-spyware Malware? Thank you again
